Isaac Collins makes MLB debut Sunday, becomes 56th different player to see action for Brewers

Brewer Hicklen’s first go-around with the club that bears his namesake lasted one week.

Utilityman Isaac Collins was selected from Class AAA Nashville by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday before falling to the Colorado Rockies, 4-1. Hicklen was optioned back to Nashville, and Christian Yelich was transferred to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for Collins on the 40-man roster.

The 28-year-old Hicklen, who was called up when rosters expanded to 28 on Sept. 1, didn’t perform as hoped as he went 0 for 5 with four strikeouts. He stole a base as a pinch-runner on Friday, but was thrown out at third base for the final out in a 3-2 loss to the Rockies.

Collins, much like Hicklen, was a standout at Nashville this season. In 113 games and 500 plate appearances, Collins batted .273 with a .386 on-base percentage and .475 slugging percentage. The 27-year-old hit 14 home runs and 28 doubles while also stealing 24 bases.

Collins made his MLB debut Sunday – the 10th player to do so for Milwaukee this season – and batted seventh in the Brewers’ lineup. It was a memorable day for him as well, as he singled to center in his first at-bat and followed that up with a steal of second base on the next pitch.

The Maple Grove, Minn. native was also facing his former organization, adding another interesting wrinkle.

The Rockies drafted Collins in the ninth round in 2019, but left him unprotected for the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft following the 2022 season. The Brewers plucked him from Colorado in that draft and kept him at Class AA Biloxi for almost all of 2023. He batted .269 with 10 homers and a .855 OPS.

"It’s been a long journey," Collins said before the game. "For it to culminate against playing Colorado is storybook, really."

Collins presents versatility in both the field and the box. He’s a switch-hitter and can play both the infield and outfield, with most of his experience this season coming in left field and at second base. Collins can play all three outfield spots as well as second base.

"I consider myself as a glue guy," he said. "I try to get on base. Let the big dogs knock me in. I switch-hit, can play corner outfield, second, third. My goal, really, when I go up to the plate is to have a competitive at-bat.

"I don’t have light-tower power but if I get up there and can work a walk, have a good, quality at-bat, that’s what I’m here for."

Collins was the 56th different player to appear in a game for Milwaukee this season. The Brewers utilized 59 players in 2023.
