Braden Smith, JuJu Brents expected to start Colts camp despite offseason surgery

Indianapolis Colts cornerback JuJu Brents had an up-and-down rookie season in which he missed eight games due to injury.

WESTFIELD — Two key Colts who underwent offseason surgery are expected to open training camp on the field.

Second-year cornerback JuJu Brents, who battled wrist, hip and hamstring injuries throughout his rookie season, underwent surgery to clean up his ankle after the completion of the team’s offseason in June.

Unlike last season, though, Brents is expected to open training camp on the fields at Grand Park.

“It was kind of bothering him,” Ballard said. “But he’s good, he’ll be cleared. He could be a little limited early for a few days, but I watched him work out. He looks good.”

Starting right tackle Braden Smith, who sat out the team’s offseason workouts after undergoing surgery to fix the knee issue that plagued him throughout the 2023 season, is also expected to be on the field right away.

“We’ll start working him back in slowly,” Ballard said. “I think we’ll activate him.”

  • Defensive tackle Raekwon Davis was placed on the active/non-football illness list. Ballard did not comment on Davis, a former Dolphins starter signed during free agency to provide depth, during his media availability.

  • Backup slot cornerback Chris Lammons will start the season on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to recover from offseason ankle surgery. “He’s probably a week or two away,” Ballard said. Lammons is an emergency option on defense — all 60 snaps he played last season came in place of an injured Kenny Moore against Las Vegas — and he made two special-teams tackles.

  • Running back Tyler Goodson reported for camp with a toe injury that could force him to miss some time. Goodson, the back who dropped Gardner Minshew’s errant fourth-down toss that cost the Colts a chance to take the lead in the season finale against Houston, is one of the players competing for a backup role behind Jonathan Taylor after producing 13 carries for 87 yards and six catches for 34 yards last season.

  • Defensive end Genard Avery is close to returning from the torn meniscus and LCL he suffered in training camp last year. “I think we’ll go ahead with him and slowly start working him back in,” Ballard said. Avery faces a long road to the roster at a crowded defensive end position.

  • Wide receiver Ashton Dulin will be a little limited at first, but he is cleared to open training camp after suffering a torn ACL in training camp last year. Dulin has spent five seasons in Indianapolis as the team’s No. 1 gunner on special teams and a capable receiver with the physicality to play on blocking downs.
