Ranking the Premier League's top contenders for Goal of the Season

England's top division hadn't produced much in the way of extraordinary goal scoring other than the occasional curling strike, including four such goals on one memorable December day. But six weeks ago, the Premiership started scoring in style.

First, there was Philippe Coutinho's thunder strike for Liverpool against Southampton. Then there was Matt Phillips' 45-yard rocket for Queens Park Rangers against Crystal Palace. On Saturday, a third candidate emerged when Charlie Adam's strike from about 65 yards stunned Chelsea.

With seven rounds left, the Premier League is sure to treat us to more extraordinary goals. But right now, here's how we rank the three candidates for Goal of the Season. If you agree or don't agree – or have another nominee – let us know below in the comments section.

3. Matt Phillips, Queens Park Rangers

The 45-yarder matched the power of Coutinho's goal, but it falls short elsewhere when compared to the other two.

2. Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool

Being a match-winner in a game featuring teams with top-four aspirations, the goal was the most meaningful of the three. That fact elevates it above Phillips' long-range effort.

1. Charlie Adam, Stoke City

The infrequency of the feat – scoring from your own half – puts Adam in the top spot. (Wayne Rooney's goal from the halfway line last year had us reminiscing about David Beckham's long-distance strike in 1996.) Adam also wins points for making one of the world's best goalkeepers in Thibaut Courtois look completely helpless.

UPDATE: Jermain Defoe just produced a wonder strike to boost Sunderland's bid to avoid the drop in a 1-0 win over rival Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby. Does Defoe's sweet left-footed volley deserve to be included in the Goal of the Season conversation?
