UFC contender Daniel Cormier opts for July knee surgery
UFC light heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier had hoped for a shot at 205 pound champion Jon Jones next, and even considered putting off a needed knee surgery in order to take the fight, should he have been granted one. However, when Jones instead agreed to rematch Alexander Gustafsson, Cormier was put in a tough spot - continue to train with his injured knee, as he did when he fought Dan Henderson in May at UFC 173 - or get the surgery, and hope his recovery time would coincide with the time table for facing the winner of Jones vs. Gustafsson II.
According to a UFC Tonight report, Cormier has decided to get the surgery in July to repair his LCL and ACL. The two-time Olympic wrestler will compete one more time before going under the knife, however. Cormier will put his wrestling shoes back on and wrestle one last match at the UFC Fan Expo July 5 in Las Vegas against two-time NCAA Division I national champion and U.S. national team member Chris Pendleton.
Cormier never finished his wrestling career on his own terms after suffering a kidney failure at the 2008 Olympic games because of an extreme weight cut. Now, "DC" says he will get to step on the mat one last time and do things right.
Then, it's off to the surgery table and a long rehab that will hopefully leave him healthy enough to fight the winner of Jones vs. Gustafsson. That rematch will take place Sep. 27.
