Daniel Cormier suffers partial ACL and LCL tears
UFC Tonight reports that Daniel Cormier recently had an MRI that revealed that he's suffered a 50% tear on his ACL as well as a substantial tear of his LCL. Cormier is widely expected to receive a light heavyweight title shot at the winner of Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson II, which takes place Sep. 27.
However, Cormier now has to decide whether or not to undergo surgery to repair his knee, which he injured leading up to his fight against Dan Henderson. According to the report, the former Olympic wrestler's doctors have left the decision of whether or not to undergo surgery, up to Cormier.
It is conceivable that should Cormier, 35, undergo knee surgery, he would delay his title shot considerably. However, fighting the likes of Jones or Gustafsson on one leg would certainly be an up-hill battle for "DC."
Cormier is certainly the type of elite athlete who puts winning above almost everything else, including his health. We've already mentioned how he fought all-time great Dan Henderson recently with a seriously injured knee.
But we also can't forget how, in 2008, Cormier did not even let kidney failure stop him from making weight. Certainly, that was unhealthy, but it is was also an example of the type of mental fortitude he has.
If it were you, what would you do - have surgery and try to get healthy before fighting again, or take your chances and try and grab gold? Let us know in the comments section.
We'll keep you posted on whatever Cormier decides to do.
