Bills vs. Colts score: Buffalo wins in Indianapolis for first time since 1998

INDIANAPOLIS - Fans and media love to talk about trap games, as if they actually exist.

The reality is that trap games in the NFL are a myth because when you only play 17 times in the regular season, and victories are so critical every week, no team ever looks past an opponent and starts thinking about the next.

For the Buffalo Bills, yes, looming next week is a mega showdown against their arch nemesis, the Kansas City Chiefs, but the Bills aren’t going to look past Sunday afternoon’s opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, because if they do, chances are they’ll lose to a team that is fighting for its survival in the AFC wild-card playoff race.

At 7-2, the Bills have put themselves in a good spot, particularly in the weak AFC East. But now they have to start thinking about playoff seeding, and losing to the Colts would be a tough blow, especially when - not to look ahead here - the next month has the Bills playing the Chiefs, 49ers, Rams and Lions.

Simply put, the Bills can’t afford to look past the Colts because they need to take care of business.

Final score: Buffalo Bills 30, Indianapolis Colts 20

Buffalo has won five straight games and is 8-2 for the first time since 1993.

The Bills defense forced four turnovers - three interceptions and a fumble recovery - and held the Colts scoreless in the second half.

Josh Allen completed 23 of 37 passes for 280 yards with two interceptions and James Cook rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries for the Bills. Joe Flacco went 26 of 35 for 272 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jonathan Taylor, who had 107 yards at halftime, finished with 114 yards on 21 carries, for the Colts.

Bills 30, Colts 20: Joe Flacco throws touchdown to Alec Pierce

Indianapolis went 70 yards and Joe Flacco tossed a 10-yard touchdown to Alec Pierce.

Bills 30, Colts 13: James Cook rushes for touchdown

James Cook walked into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown. Josh Allen scrambled for 21 yards on a third-and-19. Offsetting penalties on the next third down negated an Allen incompletion to give the Bills another chance to convert. Allen found Khalil Shakir, who got fantastic blocks downfield from Ryan Van Demark for a 30-yard gain. Three plays later, Allen completed to Ty Johnson for 17 yards on third-and-3. Buffalo chewed 6 minutes, 42 seconds off the clock.

Taylor Rapp intercepts Joe Flacco - 9:46 4th quarter

Joe Flacco has three interceptions. Flacco was looking deep for Alec Pierce and the pass sailed high, off the outstretched hands of Pierce. Buffalo safety Taylor Rapp intercepted it at the Bills' 16-yard line.

Bills 23, Colts 13: Tyler Bass makes 28-yard field goal

Buffalo has a two-possession lead. James Cook had carries for 9 and 16 yards to open the drive. Josh Allen found Mack Hollins for a 19-yard completion and Allen took it up the middle for 5 yards on fourth-and-1 from the Colts' 15-yard line. Allen threw the ball away on the ensuing third down and Tyler Bass made a 28-yard field goal.

Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid has knee injury

Buffalo tight end Dalton Kincaid is doubtful to return with a knee injury. Kincaid hurt his knee late in the second quarter. He went into the blue medical tent and came out of the tent wearing a brace. Kincaid was on the field to start the third quarter before leaving the game again in the second half.

Newly-signed Quinton Jefferson gets huge sack on Joe Flacco - 2:45 3rd quarter

Quinton Jefferson was cut by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, signed by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday and made a huge sack on Sunday.

Indianapolis went for it on fourth-and-2 from the Bills' 20-yard line. Jefferson dropped Flacco for the sack and a 10-yard loss as the Colts turned the ball over on downs.

Josh Allen intercepted by Kenny Moore - 5:29 2nd quarter

Buffalo gave the ball right back. Josh Allen was intercepted by Kenny Moore, who returned it 12 yards to the Bills' 40-yard line. Moore stepped in front of the pass along the right sideline, made the interception and slipped to the ground otherwise it might've been a pick-six.

Damar Hamlin recovers Joe Flacco fumble - 5:36 3rd quarter

Damar Hamlin didn't win NFL Comeback Player of the Year over Joe Flacco but he got some revenge. Greg Rousseau raked at Flacco's arm, Flacco fumbled and Hamlin recovered at the Bills' 49-yard line.

Flacco beat out Hamlin for the award last season, 151-140, although Hamlin had more first place votes with 21 to 13.

Bills down punt at 4-yard line - 9:28 3rd quarter

Sam Martin booted a 60-yard punt that was downed by Cam Lewis at the Colts' 4-yard line. Buffalo gained one first down on the possession, when Josh Allen kept it himself on fourth-and-1 from the Bills' 32-yard line for a 3-yard gain.

Indianapolis opens second half with three-and-out - 12:48 3rd quarter

The Colts went three-and-out to begin the second half. Jonathan Taylor was dropped in the backfield by Dorian Williams for a 1-yard loss, Taron Johnson sacked Joe Flacco for a loss of 1 and Flacco was forced to step up into the pocket by Von Miller and completed a 4-yard pass to Trey Sermon on third-and-12. Rigoberto Sanchez punted 53 yards and Brandon Codrington returned it 8 yards to the Bills' 23-yard line.

Halftime score: Buffalo Bills 20, Indianapolis Colts 13

Josh Allen has completed 13 of 23 passes for 188 yards with an interception and Mack Hollins has two catches for 60 yards, including a 44-yard reception to set up a field goal on the final play of the first half. Joe Flacco is 9 of 14 for 87 yards with a touchdown and interception and Jonathan Taylor has 107 yards rushing on 16 carries for the Colts.

Bills 20, Colts 13: Tyler Bass makes 47-yard field goal to end first half

The Bills stole three points at the end of the half thanks to Josh Allen’s magnificent 44-yard pass to Mack Hollins who then had the presence of mind to get out of bounds at the Colts 29.

That gave Tyler Bass the chance for a 47-yard field goal as time expired, and he drilled it.

Colts punt - 1:10 2nd quarter

Indianapolis was not able to respond to Buffalo's touchdown. Jonathan Taylor was stopped for no gain on third-and-1. Rigoberto Sanchez punted 55 yards to the Bills' 11-yard line.

Bills 17, Colts 13: Josh Allen records 57th career rushing touchdown

The Bills needed that possession, and Josh Allen - after a pretty poor start - started looking like Josh Allen and the Bills are back on top.

Allen hit Mack Hollins for 16 key yards early in the drive, then hit Khalil Shakir on a third-and-4 to keep things moving. Next, he dropped a 34-yard dime to Dawson Knox on a deep route to move the ball to the 17. And from there, Allen scampered 17 yards on a designed run to the end zone.

Buffalo retains possession after Brandon Codrington kickoff return fumble

The Bills nearly gave the ball back on the kickoff return. Buffalo returner Brandon Codrington had the ball knocked loose by Indianapolis' Ronnie Harrison Jr. After a scrum for the ball near the Colts' sideline, Buffalo lineman Alec Anderson came away with the ball.

Colts 13, Bills 10: Matt Gay makes short field goal for Indianapolis

The turnaround in this game is stunning. The Bills were rolling in the first few minutes as they opened a 10-0 lead, and since then, it has been a disaster.

Everything seemed to turn with the stupid fourth-down gamble which sent the Colts on their way to the tying touchdown. Now, after a brutal Josh Allen interception that was thrown right to EJ Speed at the Buffalo 33, the Colts have the lead.

At least the defense held up in the red zone, but Matt Gay kicked a 23-yard field goal and now the Buffalo offense, which has been terrible, has to snap out of it.

Josh Allen intercepted by E. J. Speed

Now it's the Bills with offensive miscues. Josh Allen was picked off by linebacker E.J. Speed on Buffalo's first offensive play of the possession. It's Speed's first career interception.

Allen, who opened the year with seven straight games without an interception, has thrown an interception in each of the last three games.

Bills 10, Colts 10: Joe Flacco throws touchdown to Tyler Goodson on Goodson's birthday

It feels like the Bills should be blowing the Colts out. Instead, the game is tied because Buffalo wasted multiple chances to take complete control. Joe Flacco completed a two-yard pass to Tyler Goodson to make it 10-10 to finish off a 72-yard drive.

Rather than kick a field goal to go up 13-3, the Bills opted to go for it on fourth-and-3 at the Colts 28 and Josh Allen threw incomplete to Curtis Samuel.

The Colts said thank you very much and proceeded to march right down the field, aided by a third-down penalty on Rasul Douglas which gave the Colts first and goal at the 6. Earlier, the Bills allowed the Colts to convert on third-and-7 when Joe Flacco threw an 18-yard pass to Adonai Mitchell.

Buffalo stopped on fourth down for first time this year

The Bills got to the Colts' 28 and went for it on fourth-and-3. Josh Allen threw incomplete for Curtis Samuel to turn the ball over on downs. Buffalo entered the game 9-for-9 on fourth down. Buffalo had gains of 17 yards and 12 yards on the drive with completions to Curtis Samuel and Dalton Kincaid, respectively.

Bills 10, Colts 3: Indianapolis settles for field goal after Jonathan Taylor 59-yard run

Despite nearly turning the ball over for a third time, the Colts managed to score as Matt Gay made a 27-yard-field goal right after Terrel Bernard nearly intercepted Joe Flacco.

The Colts were in position to score because Jonathan Taylor, who seems to save his best games for the Bills, broke a 59-yard run to the Bills 9 before the defense held.

Bills 10, Colts 0: Tyler Bass makes field goal to give Buffalo more points off turnovers

The Bills had an opportunity to really take charge, but they bogged down in the red zone, done in by a dumb play call on second and 10 when Joe Brady had Josh Allen run a keeper up the middle that got blown up.

So, the Bills settled for a 29-yard Tyler Bass field goal, turning Austin Johnson’s interception into only three points. The big play on the drive was James Cook’s 20-yard run on third-and-1, a play where he broke about three tackles.

Joe Flacco throws second interception to open game - 9:06 1st quarter

Indianapolis nearly turned the ball over for the second straight time to open the game. Then they did. Joe Flacco hit Josh Downs for a 21-yard gain and two plays later, AD Mitchell made a 7-yard completion. Mitchell had the ball knocked loose by cornerback Christian Benford but Downs recovered at the Bils' 39. Jonathan Taylor was stopped for no gain on third-and-1 but the Colts went for it on fourth down and Taylor kept his legs churning for 2 yards and a first down.

Flacco followed up Taylor's fourth-down conversion with another pick. Defensive end Austin Johnson made the interception and returned it 4 yards to the Bills' 47-yard line. Johnson, who hadn't had an interception at any level of football in his life until Oc.t 27 against the Seahawks, made an interception for the second time in his last three games.

Bills 7, Colts 0: Taron Johnson returns interception for touchdown on Indianapolis' first play

After punting on their first possession, the Bills defense came out for one play, and it resulted in a touchdown.

Joe Flacco threw a pass intended for Josh Downs, and Taron Johnson stepped in front and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown, furthering the case that Johnson may very well be the most important player on Buffalo’s defense.

Buffalo has a takeaway in 12 straight games.

Bills punt on first possession

Buffalo got the ball first and immediately went to Curtis Samuel, who hasn't been used much this year, for a 14-yard completion. The Bills had a busted play on the ensuing play for no gain, Allen completed to Khalil Shakir for 7 yards and on third-and-3, Allen was sacked by Kwity Paye for no gain. Sam Martin punted 48 yards to the Colts' 9-yard line.

Buffalo Bills inactives: Amari Cooper is out

Amari Cooper's wrist injury will force him to miss a second game.
Amari Cooper's wrist injury will force him to miss a second game.

The Bills are shorthanded at wide receiver as Keon Coleman was ruled out Friday, and he was joined on the inactive list by Amari Cooper. Both are suffering from wrist injuries, and the timetable for their respective returns remains cloudy.

Josh Allen will be throwing to a receiving corps that includes Khalil Shakir, Mack Hollins and Curtis Samuel, plus two players who were elevated from the practice squad - Tyrell Shavers and Jalen Virgil. Virgil has been signed to the 53-man roster.

The other inactives are linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio, offensive lineman Will Clapp, fullback Reggie Gilliam and receiver KJ Hamler, another practice squad call-up who was not selected to play ahead of Shavers.

For the Colts, receiver Michael Pittman was already ruled out Friday, so they will go into the game without one of their top players.

Sal Maiorana's prediction: Bills 26, Colts 19

For the second week in a row, the Bills will be playing a desperate team. They survived at home against division rival Miami, and now they go on the road to play the 4-5 Colts who are in the AFC wild-card mix, but currently sit outside of the top seven.

Despite their middling record, the Colts are not an easy out. All nine of their games have been decided by eight points or less so they are always in it right to the end. The Bills have played only four one-score games, but they did win three including the thriller Sunday against Miami.

Ultimately, the Bills have the better roster with the better quarterback, and if Allen plays clean, Buffalo - a team that has topped 30 points six times this year - will do enough to get the victory, even if it doesn’t get to 30 because the Colts’ offense ranks 22nd at 20.9 points per game.
