Bills vs. Cardinals: 8 things to watch for in Week 1
The Buffalo Bills begin their regular season journey with a matchup at home against the Arizona Cardinals at Highmark Stadium.
All week, topics and storylines have been discussed ahead of these two cross-conference foes.
In the end, regardless of what is said by players, coaches, media outlets and fans, it always comes down to what unfolds on the field in the NFL.
And once the battle arrives, there will be a few particular things to keep in mind to look out for.
With that, are XX things to watch for during Sunday's Bills against the Cardinals matchup:
Brady's play calling
Joe Brady has done it before and very recently, but is anything new? In the middle of last season, Brady was named Buffalo's interim offensive coordinator and now has the full-time job.
It's one thing to take over in the midst of a campaign and another to have an entire offseason to prepare. There could very well be plenty of new wrinkles in the way the Bills offense looks and we'll get the first look at that against the Cardinals.
One part of Brady's offense in 2023 that stood out is the amount of rushing the ball the offense did.It helped James Cook earn his first-career Pro Bowl bid.
Helping out Josh
No Stefon Diggs, no Gabe Davis, no wide receivers from last season aside from Khalil Shakir. Who will step up and make plays for quarterback Josh Allen.
Those to keep in mind: Tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox, plus a few...
New faces
While there are question marks, there is excitement too. Any time your favorite team gets a bunch of new players, particularly on offense, there is curiosity to watch and see how they do. For most fans in Buffalo, the two names at the top of that list will be two wide receivers: Curtis Samuel and top rookie draft pick Keon Coleman.
But hey, Josh...
While emphasis will be on those helping Allen, he needs to help himself. Allen has had five interceptions thrown over the past two years of season openers. He's knocked for his giveaways a lot nationally but it's true: It would be nice if that stopped.
Damar's time
Defensively, many eyes will be on the safety position for the Bills.
Taylor Rapp is not new, but Buffalo's coaching staff reflect confident enough to name him a starter very quickly this offseason. Next to him, Damar Hamlin has been tabbed as the Week 1 starter.
Rapp's first start in 2024 will be completely overshadowed by Hamlin's remarkable journey.
A healthy Kyler
The opposing quarterback will always be a name worth mentioning.
Arizona’s Kyler Murray will be no different.
The curveball with Murray is based off of last season. It was not his best year in the NFL. He appeared in only eight games and was sidelined due to injury. Murray only had a 3-5 record and will want to bounce back starting with Week 1 in Buffalo. His mobility is always tough to deal with.
The (other) new faces
As noted, Coleman was the Bills' top draft pick in 2024. Coleman was be going against one of his fellow wide receiver classmates in Marvin Harrison Jr.
After three quarterbacks were taken off the 2024 draft board, the Cards made Harrison the first non-QB selected at No. 4 overall... for a good reason. Harrison was overwhelmingly considered the best wideout in this year's draft.
Harrison only played three snaps in the preseason. The Bills will be the first NFL team to get a full look at him.
Playing with passion
It's Week 1. The opening weekend and the home opener at Highmark Stadium. It's nothing short of a national holiday in western New York. It's also going to be the first time since 2021 that Buffalo will see their team for the first time in their own backyard for the season opener. The Bills haven't won such an occasion since 2020 (a Week 1 home opener) and the crowd will be up for it.
