Bills vs. Cardinals: 8 storylines to watch for in Week 1
The Buffalo Bills will turn to the first page of their 2024 NFL regular season.
The Bills are fresh off an offseason with a bit of turmoil. Key departures will need to be addressed and we're about to find out how those are handled with the team's first matchup of the season at home against the Arizona Cardinals.
But before we even get to kickoff, there will be a lot of Bills-related discussions and conversations to be had throughout the coming days.
With that, here are eight storylines to watch for during the lead up to Bills vs. Cardinals on Sunday:
No Stef, no problem?
It was a big week for Stefon Diggs in Bills lore. Not for anything good.
Diggs had plenty to say this week about his former team. At the top of the list is Diggs admitting he wanted to leave Buffalo... which went over as one would expect in western New York.
When it comes to Xs and Os, there will be a lot to we're going to figure out against the Cardinals. The Bills need playmakers to step up without Diggs in the picture. Tight end Dalton Kincaid? Receiver Khalil Shakir? Running back James Cook? Rookie Keon Coleman?
There are options but few answers... for now.
Brady overall
The Bills have a new full-time offensive coordinator. It's the same as the interim, Joe Brady.
When Brady took over in 2023 after Ken Dorsey was fired there were notable changes. A big one was a commitment to rushing the ball with Cook more. Let's see how, if at all, that changes (or remains the same).
Babich's time
Bobby Babich was named Buffalo's defensive coordinator this offseason, taking over from Sean McDermott. He was previously an assistant on the Bills staff but McDermott stepped back from DC duties to just focus on head coaching in 2024.
Most notably, it was reported that Babich will be calling plays on defense. It's his first time doing so. That can always change, but with a good debut against Arizona, it probably won't.
Oh yeah, that last time...
"Hail Murray" was the last time the Bills and Cardinals faced off. Ironically enough, all four players shown above are no longer with either team.
We hate to bring it up, but it probably will be discussed this upcoming week...
Containing Kyler
One expects to always hear about the opposing quarterback leading up to a game. Arizona's Kyler Murray will be no different.
But the curveball with Murray is the interest in him based off of 2023. It was not his best year in the NFL. He appeared in only eight games and was sidelined due to injury. Murray only had a 3-5 record and will want to bounce back.
The secondary
Damar Hamlin? Mike Edwards? Second-round rookie Cole Bishop? It's unclear who is going to start next to Taylor Rapp when Sunday rolls around. Knowing the way McDermott works, he's probably going to stay mum about that until kickoff on Sunday (despite what the depth chart says). All three have rotated, and picked up various injuries, throughout the summer.
Von's involement
And of course, Von Miller. There are big hopes for the 35-year-old in 2024 after his return last year did not include a sack. Miller did not play in the preseason but it's expected that he will in Week 1. How much? That remains to be seen...
Starting at home
And of course, it's Week 1 and it's a home opener. The equivalent of a national holiday in western New York. The atmosphere at Highmark Stadium will be incredible.
Last year, the Bills beat the Raiders 38-10 in their home opener in Week 2. Sunday marks Sean McDermott's eighth home opener as head coach and he is 5-2 in those outings.
