Did Bills DC Bobby Babich hint at who is calling plays in 2024?
Wearing his shirt that read "Slobber Knocker Week" from Buffalo Bills training camp on Monday, did defensive coordinator Bobby Babich hint at who will be calling plays for the team's defense in 2024?
Throughout the offseason, Sean McDermott has consistently been mum on who would do so. In 2023, McDermott did as he doubled-down on head coaching and defensive coordinator duties.
At least in terms of title, we knew that would change. Babich was promoted to defensive coordinator.
It is Babich's first time holding a DC position. However, that doesn't mean McDermott would stop calling plays on defense. The head coach holding onto that responsibility happens around the NFL on occasion.
It's worth noting that Babich did not flat out say he would be calling plays. However, the DC referenced having plenty of pull during training camp practices when he's calling plays during team drills.
"The calling periods are great and I ask for them – the more I can do them, the better I’ll be,” Babich said via video conference. “There are calls I wish I had back and there are calls (that) you take a note, ‘I like that there.'"
In addition, Babich mentioned how he will be in the coaches' booth this season. That positioning often is used by coordinators who call plays.
Again, it's not a direct answer--It is an indicator, though.
