Bills 53-man roster projection, post-Bears preseason game
The official start of the Buffalo Bills' 2024 NFL season is not until September.
But the unofficial one has arrived.
The dog days of training camp have arrived around the NFL. Now we're in the thick of it in the preseason as the Bills are fresh off a 33-6 loss to the Chicago Bears in their exhibition opener.
Here is Bills Wire's 53-man roster projection for the team following their preseason loss to the Bears:
Quarterback (2)
Josh Allen, Mitchell Trubisky
Cut(s): Ben DiNucci
Not much of an explanation needed here. Dinucci is QB3 on the practice squad after Shane Buechele's neck injury.
Running back (3)
James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty Johnson
Cut(s): Darrynton Evans, Frank Gore Jr.
A fourth-round rookie, Davis has a look at being the change-of-pace behind Cook. Johnson makes it as offensive coordinator Joe Brady liked him last season.
Fullback (1)
Reggie Gilliam
Cut(s): N/A
Wide receiver (6)
Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mack Hollins, Tyrell Shavers
Cut(s): KJ Hamler, Andy Isabella, Lawrence Keys, Xavier Johnson, Justin Shorter
Valdes-Scantling has continued to have issues with drops in training camp and now the preseason. But he's shown a good relationship with Allen. QB1 could have some pull here and with the lack of depth at receiver, keeping six makes sense.
Tight end (3)
Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox, Quintin Morris
Cut(s): Tre' McKitty, Zach Davidson
Davidson has made a push during training camp and the summer. He still has a long way to go since Morris has shown plenty of promise over the years with his versatility.
Offensive Line (10)
Dion Dawkins, Connor McGovern, David Edwards, O'Cyrus Torrence, Spencer Brown, La'el Collins, Ryan Van Demark, Alec Anderson, Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, Tylan Grable
Cut(s): Keaton Bills, Will Clapp, Gunner Britton, Mike Edwards, Richard Gouraige
Grable could be the next Bills draft pick to be plucked by another team if he's cut, but Grable has always been viewed as a raw prospect and he has slowly taken positive steps forward this summer.
Keeping only nine offensive lineman is also due to versatility. Collins is one of those as he can play both guard and tackle.
Note: UK draft pick Travis Clayton has a roster exemption as an international player.
Defensive tackle (4)
Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, DeWayne Carter, Austin Johnson
Cut(s): Eli Ankou, Branson Deen, Gable Steveson, DeShawn Williams
The defensive tackle group is pretty straight forward. Williams has NFL experience and some versatility which makes him an option for a fifth spot here.
Defensive end (5)
Greg Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa, Von Miller, Dawuane Smoot, Javon Solomon
Cut(s): Kameron Cline, Kingsley Jonathan, Casey Toohill, Rondell Bothroyd, David Ugwoegbu
Toohill is similar to Williams at tackle. He has NFL experience, but with the Bills drafting Solomon, that investment makes it more of an uphill battle.
Linebacker (5)
Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard, Dorian Williams, Edefuan Ulofoshio, Nicholas Morrow
Cut(s): Baylon Spector, Joe Andreessen, Shayne Simon, Deion Jones
Draft pick investments in Williams and Ulofoshio weigh heavy here, but Spector might not have that same luxury as a seventh-round pick that's been on the fringes of the roster in recent years. Jones has experience the Bills coaching staff could covet but he is playing pretty far down the pecking order currently.
But similar to other positions near the trenches, we won't know much
Cornerback (6)
Rasul Douglas, Christian Benford, Kaiir Elam, Ja'Marcus Ingram, Taron Johnson, Daequan Hardy
Cut(s): Kyron Brown, Te'Cory Couch, Keni-H Lovely
Hardy is really the only surprise here. As of now, we only have limited intel to go off for him, but he's made plays and has been the lesser of two evils at returner.
Safety (5)
Taylor Rapp, Cole Bishop, Mike Edwards, Cam Lewis, Damar Hamlin
Cut(s): Dee Delaney, Kendal Williamson, Kareem Jackson, Terrell Burgess
Second-round rookie Cole Bishop and veteran Mike Edwards are injured. It makes the depth chart analysis difficult, but not really a roster projection. These five still looked settled in for now unless Edwards ends up on injured reserve. That would open up another roster spot.
Special teams (3)
Tyler Bass, Sam Martin, Reid Ferguson
Cut(s): Jake Browning
