Biggest takeaways from the Saints vs. Falcons Week 10 matchup
The New Orleans Saints finally got a win, taking a 20-17 victory over their rival Atlanta Falcons and moving back to 3-7 on the year. There were definitely some good and bad moments in this games on both sides of the ball, but ultimately a win is a win, and the Darren Rizzi era opens with the first victory since September.
Here are our 6 takeaways from the Saints Week 10 victory over the Falcons:
1. The Rizz era has more juice in his debut
Darren Rizzi is an immensely more animated coach than Dennis Allen. The excitement on the interim head coach’s face was evident at multiple moments. The team just played with more energy this week opposed to recent memory. The charge of a coaching change can spark that change sometimes, but this doesn’t feel temporary. Energy can be infectious and Rizzi brings it in bundles.
2. Joe Woods taking over defensive play calling was seamless
The defensive coaching switches that occurred with the Dennis Allen firing were all intriguing, but defensive play calling going to Joe Woods was certainly something that would take some getting used to, or so we thought. Woods did a phenomenal job holding the defense together when it mattered and sealing the game when the offense began to sputter in the second half.
3. The Saints still have a deep threat on offense
Marquez Valdes-Scantling was brought in to be the deep threat the Saints loss in Rashid Shaheed. That’s Valdes-Scantling’s signature trait, and he showed he could bring field stretching to the offense in Week 10. He doesn’t have to be as consistent as Shaheed, but Derek Carr likes to go downfield. Valdes-Scantling allows him to continue doing this moving forward.
4. The offense is still hit or miss at times
The offense was phenomenal to open this game, with Derek Carr and MVS showing a great connection and the Saints moving the ball effectively. However, in the second half that was not the case, and the defense had to take over responsibility for the win. Despite a good showing compared to prior weeks, it is still very inconsistent right now offensively.
5. The Saints wide receiver options are still limited outside the top few
Despite a phenomenal game from Marquez Valdes-Scantling and a few good catches from Kevin Austin Jr, the Saints were not having anyone really getting open at the receiver position. Dante Pettis was the only WR who had a reception beyond those two, and it was for 8 yards. The WR cycle will probably keep switching this next week, and we will see who ends up being rostered in Week 11.
6. The Saints defense closed out the game
This is the first time the Saints defense has been locked into a close game and sealed the deal. To make it even better, they had to do it twice. Tyrann Mathieu came down with the first takeaway of the game. The offense gave the ball back to Atlanta with a little less than two minutes and one timeout. Chase Young forced a huge fumble and the Saints stopped the Falcons again.
