Biggest surprises on 49ers' 53-man roster
The San Francisco 49ers announced their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday.
There weren't a ton of surprise cuts, but there were a handful of unexpected additions to that group. It's worth noting left tackle Trent Williams isn't on the roster because he is still on the reserve/did not report list. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is on the roster, and safety Talanoa Hufanga was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.
There are still some changes ahead, but here are the most surprising inclusions on the first version of the 49ers' 53-man roster:
CB Ambry Thomas
It looked like Thomas's time in a 49ers uniform might be coming to an end when he suffered a broken forearm in the preseason opener. Before going down with that injury, he had a couple of missed tackles and a holding penalty in the end zone that eventually led to a touchdown. He's a candidate to go on IR while recovering from his broken forearm. It's unclear where exactly he fits into a 49ers secondary where he's likely at the bottom of the depth chart.
TE Jake Tonges
Perhaps an even bigger surprise than Tonges being on the roster is that he and George Kittle are the only two tight ends the 49ers kept. However, it's certainly a shock that Tonges beat out Brayden Willis, Logan Thomas and Eric Saubert for the lone roster spot alongside Kittle. He flashed some versatility by filling in at fullback in camp, and he hauled in nine receptions through three preseason games. There's a strong chance another TE finds his way onto the roster by Week 1. Tonges will not only be on the team, but he could have a significant role as well.
RB Patrick Taylor Jr.
It looked like undrafted rookie Cody Schrader would be the extra running back the 49ers kept if Elijah Mitchell wasn't going to be on the roster. Instead of Schrader, who performed well in the preseason and offered some special teams upside, San Francisco went with the veteran Taylor. He's a big-bodied back who primarily contributed on special teams with the Green Bay Packers the last three years. Taylor could also work in as a third-down and short yardage back for the 49ers.
WR Ronnie Bell
The 49ers kept seven receivers, which opened the door for Bell to stick around. He appeared to be the odd man out in the receiving corps as Chris Conley's ascent continued and Jacob Cowing burst on the scene. Bell managed to find his way onto the club though after stringing together some good training camp sessions. He can help on special teams and provide depth in the receiving corps. Bell may have a longer-term role, but he could also be insurance in case Brandon Aiyuk and/or Ricky Pearsall aren't available for the regular season opener.
DE Sam Okuayinonu
Additional defensive end depth was going to be essential for the 49ers even before Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos were hurt in the preseason finale. With Gross-Matos listed as week-to-week with a knee sprain, Okuayinonu gives San Francisco an extra edge rusher they've seen all offseason. It's unlikely they'll want to lean on him a ton throughout the year, but he showed enough in camp and the preseason to earn their trust at least in the short term.
