Bengals studs and duds from preseason Week 2 loss to Bears

The Cincinnati Bengals got some big performances from certain players on Saturday during the preseason Week 2 encounter with the Chicago Bears.

While preseason games are only a small fraction of what goes into a team's decision-making process, this one felt more important than most exhibitions for the Bengals. They played just a few starters, tried some new players in new spots and stumbled upon some interesting results that could impact the depth chart and the shape of the final roster.

Here is a look at the studs and duds from the game in Chicago ahead next week's preseason finale.

Stud: LB Maema Njongmeta

Bengals fans will want to get to know the name. Njongmeta had a huge debut last week and kept it going on Saturday, making some big plays and looking like he belongs. There's room on the end of the depth chart for him, too, especially if he can acquit himself well on special teams.

Dud: OL Trey Hill

The veteran is losing ground to late-rounder Matt Lee in a hurry. He got whistled for multiple penalties on Saturday, and as a primary center who might be better at guard, there's little time for him to make the losses back.

A mix: CB Josh Newton

The scrappy rookie earned a bad flag at one point, but was otherwise involved in some major plays and had an almost Mike Hilton-type air to his game. He's not going to crack the starting lineup, but he's got fourth corner written all over him. Later, he coughed up a touchdown in single coverage, though, evening out his day as one might expect for a rookie corner.

Dud: OL Jackson Carman

Carman found himself demoted on Saturday, with Jaxson Kirkland notably getting some early looks at left tackle. He had those string of penalties last week and didn't get in the game until the fourth quarter.

Stud: DL Kris Jenkins

The second-round pick redeemed himself for last week's struggles by registering a sack and generally playing better overall. It's a great sign -- the Bengals really intend for him to be a big part of the committee that makes up for the loss of DJ Reader.

Dud: P Ryan Rehkow

With Brad Robbins out hurt, Rehkow had a chance to make a statement. Instead, just one of his six punts finished inside the 20 and his numbers were exaggerated by a friendly bounce.
