Bengals 53-man roster projection before final cuts
The Cincinnati Bengals will trim the roster to 53 players by Tuesday's deadline and got a head start on the process over the weekend by announcing 11 cuts.
Since the NFL condensed the cut-down process into just one deadline and the Bengals played an early preseason Week 3 game, the front office got out in front of the rest of the league on this.
But those cuts didn't really feature a surprise and none of the players let go made our prior final roster projections.
Keep in mind that players cut can still come back via the practice squad and that the 53-man roster isn't really "final," not when teams can still claim waived players, sign free agents and make trades.
Here's a final attempting at projecting that initial 53.
Quarterback
(2): Joe Burrow, Jake Browning
Cut: Logan Woodside, Rocky Lombardi
Lombardi was already waived and Woodside should follow.
Running back
(3): Zack Moss, Chase Brown, Trayveon Williams
Cut: Elijah Collins, Noah Cain
Chris Evans (IR)
Williams put in heavy work in the preseason finale, suggesting they might just keep three and promote from practice squad as needed.
Wide receiver
(6): Ja’Marr Chase, Jermaine Burton, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas, Charlie Jones, Trenton Irwin
Cut: Hakeem Butler, Kendric Pryor, Shedrick Jackson, Kwamie Lassiter II, Cole Burgess,
Butler and Lassiter area already gone, which makes this pretty predictable.
Tight end
(5): Mike Gesicki, Drew Sample, Tanner Hudson, Erick All, Tanner McLachlan
Cut: Cam Grandy
If one has to go, it might be Hudson, but we make it work here.
Offensive line
(9): Orlando Brown Jr., Cordell Volson, Ted Karras, Matt Lee, Alex Cappa, Trent Brown, Amarius Mims, Cody Ford, Jaxson Kirkland
Cut: Devin Cochran, Eric Miller, Nate Gilliam, Trey Hill, Jackson Carman
D'Ante Smith (IR)
We already had Lee and Kirkland making it and Hill and Carman on the outs. Carman is already officially gone. These nine are versatile enough to make it work on the initial 53.
Defensive line
(9): Sam Hubbard, B.J. Hill, Sheldon Rankins, Kris Jenkins, McKinnley Jackson, Trey Hendrickson, Myles Murphy, Joseph Ossai, Cedric Johnson
Cut: Jay Tufele, Cedric Johnson, Domenique Davis, Travis Bell, Devonnsha Maxwell, Justin Blazek, Andre Carter, Joshua Pryor, Carlos Davis, Zach Carter
Cam Sample (IR), Jeff Gunter (retired)
Johnson has bene good enough to make it. Carlos Davis might be a sleeper after a strong third preseason game.
Linebacker
(5): Logan Wilson, Joe Bachie, Maema Njongmeta, Germaine Pratt, Akeem Davis-Gaither
Cut: Shaka Heyward, Devin Harper, Aaron Casey
Njongmeta is undeniable. The other undrafted notable, Casey, is already gone, but should be back on the practice squad.
Cornerback
(6): Dax Hill, DJ Turner, Cam Taylor-Britt, Josh Newton, Mike Hilton, Lance Robinson
Cut: DJ Ivey (or PUP), Allan George, Nate Brooks, Jalen Davis
Allan George is already gone, making our Lance Robinson pick from earlier even likelier.
Safety
(5): Jordan Battle, Vonn Bell, Geno Stone, Tycen Anderson, Daijahn Anthony
Cut: Michael Dowell, P.J. Jules
Bell mentoring Anderson, Anthony and Battle is a best-case scenario.
Special Teams
(3): Evan McPherson, Brad Robbins, Cal Adomitis
Cut: Brad Robbins, Ryan Rehkow, Austin McNamara
Swap in Rehkow for now if Robbins isn't healthy, but he's been too erratic to earn it otherwise.
