How Belmont transfer Cade Tyson will help UNC basketball

Belmont transfer Cade Tyson has committed to UNC basketball, Tyson announced Sunday afternoon in a social media post.

A 6-foot-7, 205-pound wing from Monroe, Tyson averaged 15 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in two seasons with the Bruins. He made 44.1% of his 3-pointers on 287 attempts.

Across 31 games last season, Tyson was 15th nationally in three-point percentage at 46.5% and had 21 games with multiple treys. He averaged 5.5 attempts from deep per game.

That production can help the Tar Heels replace two of their top three 3-point shooters from last season.

Cormac Ryan — who shot 35.4% on 212 attempts from beyond the arc — maxed out his eligibility and Harrison Ingram (who shot 38.5% on 169 attempts) has declared for the NBA Draft.

RJ Davis, the reigning ACC Player of the Year and league’s top scorer, hasn’t made a decision on his future as of April 28. Davis made 113 three-pointers last season and shot 39.7%.

Ryan, Armando Bacot and Paxson Wojick played their final game as Tar Heels in the loss to Alabama. Ingram declaring for the draft and Seth Trimble returning after entering the transfer portal leaves head coach Hubert Davis with three scholarships available to retool the 2024-25 roster.

Sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau, along with freshmen Ian Jackson and Drake Powell are expected to be among UNC’s top players next season. Tyson has two seasons of eligibility. His older brother, Hunter, played at Clemson and currently with the NBA’s Denver Nuggets.
