Beating No. 1 Texas puts Georgia football coach Kirby Smart in the 100-win club
AUSTIN, Texas — Georgia football knocked off No. 1 Texas 30-15 Saturday night and in the process Kirby Smart won his 100th game as Bulldog coach.
He did it in his seventh game of his ninth season and now has a record of 100-17 as a head coach.
“The bottom line unless something crazy happens, he’ll probably hit 200 one day,” former Georgia coach Mark Richt said.
Smart’s .855 winning percentage is the best in SEC history, just ahead of former Alabama and LSU coach Nick Saban’s .847

Smart in 117 games ties for the fifth fastest to win 100 games (with at least five years or 50 win at a major college by the NCAA), according to Georgia. That’s behind Gil Dobie (108 at Washington, Navy, Cornell), George Woodruff (109 at Penn), Bud Wilkerson (111 at Oklahoma) and Fielding Yost (114, mostly at Michigan).
Smart ties Knute Rocke (Notre Dame) and Chris Petersen (Boise State and Washington).
Linebacker Jalon Walker presented Smart with a game ball in the locker room afterward to mark his 100th win.
“A lot of credit goes to a lot of people," Smart said. "Sam Pittman, (Jim) Chaney, Dell McGee, Todd Monken," Smart said afterwards in his postgame press conference referencing three members of his original staff and Monken the offensive coordinator for Georgia's back-to-back national championships. "A lot of players. Kamari Lassiter. D'Andre Swift here tonight.(DeAndre) Baker. Just flooded the sidelines. So many others had an involvement in those 100 wins."
He is the fourth Georgia coach to hit the 100-win mark and 20th in the SEC.
Smart’s winning percentages tops Vince Dooley (201-77-10, .715), Richt (145-51,.740) and Wally Butts (140-86-9, .615).
Richt said he remembered when he was at Florida State linebackers Joe Kines, who also coached at Georgia, called the UGA job “a goldmine waiting to happen.”
Said Smart on 100 wins: "It’s pretty cool to hit that number because when I started I thought that was unreachable, unattainable. Now in 10 years, 9 years, we get there. It’s a credit to this university and the support we have that we’ve been able to do that.”
