The move comes as the NFL trade deadline approaches. The deadline is 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Herbert was selected by the Bears in the sixth round (No. 217 overall) of the 2021 draft out of Virginia Tech. He had a productive first three seasons for a late-round pick, appearing in 42 games (12 starts) and accumulating 1,775 rushing yards, 287 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns.

Herbert ran for a career-high 733 yards in 2022 and was the team’s second-leading rusher, behind quarterback Justin Fields, with 611 yards last season.

But Herbert was behind D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson in the Bears’ backfield this season. He appeared in six of the team’s eight games, rushing just eight times for 16 yards and one touchdown and catching two passes for four yards.
