Austin Reaves on Lakers' new structure, his role under coach JJ Redick

Los Angeles Lakers fans rejoiced when their team fired Darvin Ham in May after serving as head coach for two seasons. The question is whether the JJ Redick era will be an improvement by any means.

So far, the signs are looking good. Lakers players reportedly love playing for Redick, and he has brought a new emphasis on structure, attention to detail, analytics and the development of young players.

Guard Austin Reaves is one player many believe could see a jump in his production thanks to Redick's coaching. He said he feels he and his teammates will benefit from the structure Redick has put into place.

Via Lakers Nation:

“It’s not even really just for me,” Reaves added. “I just think the whole structure and foundation that these coaches have brought in for us, talking with everybody, is a great start because I feel like a lot of times last year we won a lot of games off of talent and when you have talent around structure then you have opportunities to do something really special. So I don’t think it’s necessarily for me or not, I just think that everything that they’ve came in and talked about makes sense to me for our whole collective group.”

During the preseason, the Lakers had a considerably greater amount of ball and player movement, especially away from the ball, in their set offense, and they also consistently looked to pitch the basketball upcourt in transition. Those are two things that didn't happen much under Ham.

The team will open its 2024-25 regular season on Tuesday evening at Crypto.com Arena against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
