Auburn football blows lead, crashes and burns in loss at Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Upset-minded Auburn football blew a 14-point second-half lead and missed its opportunity to knock off No. 16 Missouri.

Auburn (2-5, 0-4 SEC) fell 21-17 to Mizzou (6-1, 2-1 SEC) on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri.

Mizzou quarterback Brady Cook saved his team's season after exiting the game in the first quarter only to return late in the third to spark the comeback. He led two touchdown drives, including one that ended with Jamal Roberts scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 46 seconds remaining.

Auburn is left still seeking its first win in SEC play. It desperately needs to bounce back when it travels to Kentucky next week.

1:55 p.m.: Auburn gets the stop it needs. A pair of sacks backs Mizzou up and it punts the ball to the Auburn 23 with 9:55 to go.

1:49 p.m.: Auburn responds with a three-and-out. Three-straight runs. Eek. Mizzou ball at its 19.

1:44 p.m.: Mizzou is in the endzone on the first play of the fourth quarter. Marcus Carroll from two yards away.

Mizzou goes for two and Brady Cook powers in to make it a three-point game.

End of third quarter: Auburn 17, Missouri 6

1:39 p.m.: Brady Cook comes back slinging. He hits Mookie Cooper deep down the middle of the field. He breaks a tackle and turns it into a 78-yard gain to the Auburn 2. This game got pretty interesting quickly.

1:37 p.m.: Auburn picks up 10 on third down and settles for a 30-yard field goal but Towns McGough misses it wide left. Still 17-6. Mizzou QB Brady Cook is back in the game.

1:35 p.m.: Auburn burns its second timeout after Payton Thorne took a 12-yard sack to make it third-and-22.

1:31 p.m.: Auburn just picked up a first down on third-and-short at the Mizzou 40.

1:13 p.m.: Auburn goes three-and-out... Luther Burden III muffs the punt, the ball gets batted and Antonio Kite recovers the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. Wowzers. 17-3 Auburn.

1:08 p.m.: Auburn forces a three-and-out and Mizzou shanks it. Auburn holds, its second special teams penalty, pushing it a little further back. Auburn ball at its 41.

1:02 p.m.: Payton Thorne missed a play after he got rocked. On his second play back in, he completed a bomb to Cam Coleman for a 47-yard touchdown. Auburn takes its first lead at 10-3.

12:53 p.m.: Approaching the second half. Mizzou said starting quarterback Brady Cook and running back Nate Noel are "unlikely to return" with lower-body injuries.

Halftime: Auburn 3, Missouri 3

12:34 p.m. — As "meh" of a half of football as you'll ever watch. Eugene Asante ends the second quarter with a sack. Auburn's got a few hits in on Drew Pyne since he entered the game.

Payton Thorne is 11-15 for 70 yards. Auburn has 58 yards on the ground.

Mizzou has 133 total yards with 69 coming through the air.

12:32 p.m. — The banged-up Mizzou offense just got the ball to Luther Burden III for the first time today. That's a win for the Auburn defense.

12:27 p.m.: Auburn goes ultra-conservative on third-and-10 and loses five on a handoff to Jarquez Hunter.

Auburn punts and Mizzou is pinned at its eight with 1:48 left in the half.

12:23 p.m.: Two-minute "timeout" after Auburn picks up 15 after Jeremiah Cobb breaks a tackle to make it... third-and-10. This game has been rough. Auburn at the Mizzou 33.

12:20 p.m.: Auburn picks up a first on third-and-short and gets a horsecollar penalty added on. Auburn at the Mizzou 33.

12:18 p.m.: Mizzou missed a 55-yard field goal. Solid field position for Auburn at its own 38.

12:14 p.m.: Mizzou QB Brady Cook is still not on the sideline and Drew Pyne remains in the game. No update in the press box after initial sideline reports indicated it wasn't too serious. Weird.

12:09 p.m.: Payton Thorne now fumbles after running into his lead-blocker's derriere and Mizzou recovers. This one is going to stand. Missouri ball at its 40 and this game is ugly.

12:05 p.m.: Jarquez Hunter's fumble is no longer a fumble. A cheek hit the ground and Auburn retains possession at its own 47.

12:01 p.m.: As I was clicking "publish" on the previous update, Jarquez Hunter fumbled and the ball was recovered by Mizzou. It's being reviewed and there's a good chance this one gets overturned. Might be Auburn ball around midfield.

Noon: Mizzou was rolling deeper into Auburn territory but a fumble on the QB-RB exchange was recovered by Jalen McLeod at Auburn's 33.

11:52 a.m.: Auburn's drive stalls and Towns McGough boots in a 32-yard field goal to tie it up.

11:49 a.m.: An 18-yard connection between Payton Thorne and Jarquez Hunter gets Auburn to the Mizzou 19. So far, a seven-play drive that's gone for 63 yards after starting with eight yards between two drives.

End of the first quarter: Missouri 3, Auburn 0

11:40 a.m.: The quarter ends after Auburn strung together a pair of runs for 10-plus. It had eight yards in its first two drives.

Auburn is a little thankful to only trail 3-0 at the end of the first. It is at its own 49 when the second quarter begins.

11:39 a.m.: Breaking: Auburn has its first first-down! Payton Thorne ran for 14 yards.

11:37 a.m.: Auburn bailed out defensively for the second drive in a row. On third-and-2, tight end Jordon Harris dropped a pass when he had plenty of room to run. Instead, Mizzou punts.

Auburn takes over at its 22 with 1:57 left in the first.

11:35 a.m.: Another three-and-out for Auburn. It has eight yards in six plays. Mizzou takes over at its 23.

11:29 a.m.: Auburn gets away with what looked like a DPI but the refs ruled a deep ball uncatchable on third-down.

Mizzou misses a 49-yarder wide-left. It's still 3-0 Mizzou with 4:56 left in the quarter.

11:23 a.m.: Auburn goes three-and-out on its first offensive drive and the punt only gets out to the 50. Not a good start.

11:16 a.m.: Mizzou kicker Blake Craig boots in a 51-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 8:24 left in the first.

11:15 a.m.: Missouri QB Brady Cook goes down on his own and limps off the field. Sack for a loss of 11 while going untouched. He's going straight to the locker room with a jog. Drew Pine replaces him.

11:11 a.m.: Missouri gets into Auburn territory with ease with QB Brady Cook completing two of his first three passes for 22 yards. Mizzou at the Auburn 44.

11:05 a.m.: It's about go-time from Columbia.

Auburn won the toss and will defer to the second half.

Pregame updates for Auburn football vs Missouri

10:44 a.m.: It might be crazy to those who have followed Auburn this season but everyone's pretty much 50-50 on how this game will go. Folks with Mizzou say they have no idea how good because of the schedule it's played and how the Texas A&M loss went down. They're well aware Auburn could look better if it wasn't for the turnovers.

10:35 a.m.: Mizzou running back Nate Noel and wide receiver Luther Burden III have officially been announced as starters for today's game. Noel spent most of the week on the injury report while Burden exited last week's UMass win with a shoulder injury.

10:05 a.m.: Good morning from what the locals call "CoMo." Both sets of Tigers are on the field warming up for Missouri's homecoming game. A sold-out crowd is expected here at Memorial Stadium.

The final SEC availability report was released this morning and Auburn will be without Jamonta Waller (OLB), Tyler Scott (DB), Champ Anthony (DB) and Brandon Frazier (TE).

Mizzou, notably, removed star wide receiver Luther Burden III from its availability report. Running back Nate Noel has also been removed and will play this morning.
