AUBURN — Auburn football turned the ball over five times Saturday and fell 21-14 to Cal at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Payton Thorne passed for a touchdown and ran for another but threw four interceptions as Auburn (1-1) struggled to move the ball consistently. Cal (2-0) got a big game from quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who passed for 233 yards and two scores before leaving with a lower leg injury late in the fourth quarter.

Auburn will host New Mexico next. Cal will host San Diego State.

The Tigers earned a 73-3 victory over Alabama A&M in its opener as the offense scored on four of its first five drives. Cal, now of the ACC, was coming off a 31-13 victory over UC Davis.

Auburn defeated Cal 14-10 last season.
