Arch Manning likely starting for injured Quinn Ewers vs. Mississippi State, per reports

According to multiple media reports, Arch Manning will likely lead Texas football into its Southeastern Conference debut.

Citing sources, ESPN reported Saturday morning that UT quarterback Quinn Ewers will likely miss a second straight start while nursing a strained oblique although a final decision had not yet been made. Multiple outlets later published similar reports.

A Texas spokesperson told the American-Statesman on Saturday that an official update for Ewers was not yet available. An SEC-mandated availability report for Texas will be released around 90 minutes before Texas plays Mississippi State this afternoon.

If Ewers is indeed sidelined, that would leave Manning as the starting quarterback when No. 2 Texas (4-0) hosts Mississippi State (1-3) at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. This will be the first-ever SEC game for the Longhorns.

Since replacing Ewers in the second quarter of a 56-7 win over UTSA on Sept. 21, Manning has thrown for 481 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Manning also scored on a 67-yard run against UTSA in Week 3. A five-star prospect during the 2023 recruiting cycle, Manning made his first career start in the ULM game Week 4.

ANALYSIS: Texas believes it has the depth to compete in SEC — and a CFP title. History says it may

After playing Mississippi State, Texas has a bye on its schedule. The Longhorns won't play again until they meet Oklahoma in Dallas on Oct. 12.
