How Arch Manning impressed Steve Sarkisian, injury update on Texas football RB Jaydon Blue

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said he's handling the hysteria surrounding Arch Manning and his performance Saturday by not addressing it with Manning or the team.

"I don't do anything," Sarkisian said at his press conference Monday. "Arch is just another guy on our team. The reason I'm able to do that is because that's who Arch is every day. He's a selfless teammate. He cares about the guys on the team. He cares about Quinn (Ewers). They've got a good relationship."

Manning, a redshirt freshman, became a national headline Saturday when he entered Texas' 56-7 win over UTSA after Ewers' abdominal injury and delivered an electrifying performance.

The grandson of Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints legend Archie Manning and the nephew of NFL greats Peyton and Eli Manning went 9-for-12 through the air for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He ripped off a 67-yard rushing TD, too.

Sarkisian said Ewers is "questionable" for Texas' next game against Louisiana-Monroe (2-0) on Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN+), so it's possible Manning could get his first career start.

There's a "level of appreciation" between Ewers and Manning, Sarkisian said.

"I think Quinn, he just wants to play," Sarkisian said. "Nobody wants to have to come out of the game because of an injury. But I think if you asked Quinn today, he's fired up for Arch, because he knows how hard Arch works."

What impressed Texas football's Steve Sarkisian about Arch Manning

Sarkisian said he thought Manning, in general, made strong decisions against the Roadrunners, pointing out that his first touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. was on his third read.

But Sarkisian often harps on how much he values physicality and toughness, and he highlighted that Manning displayed both of those attributes when he took a hit in the pocket while delivering a 75-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo.

"He takes a really good shot," Sarkisian said. "Two guys come and hit him late on the delivery, and he's able to stand in there. He didn't flinch, and he delivered the touchdown pass. Definitely encouraged by that."

Jaydon Blue injury: What Steve Sarkisian said

The Longhorns (3-0) played without running back Jaydon Blue after he suffered an ankle injury against Michigan two weeks ago.

Jerrick Gibson got most of the reps against the Roadrunners, carrying the ball 13 times for 75 yards in Blue's stead.

Sarkisian said Blue is "making good progress" but did not offer an estimate on whether he'd play, only that he hoped to get him back.

Arch Manning completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns against UTSA, and he scored on a 67-yard run.

Sarkisian said the same of defensive back Jelani McDonald, who also didn't suit up last Saturday.
