What Andrew Brunette said about Nashville Predators' power play after third loss in row
The Nashville Predators suffered their third loss in a row on Tuesday − falling 3-0 to the Boston Bruins at Bridgestone Arena − and one of the biggest culprits was the power play.
The power play unit went scoreless in four attempts against the Bruins (44-17-15), managing only three shots. The Bruins also scored a shorthanded goal late in the third period, breaking a scoreless tie against the Predators (43-28-4).
Predators coach Andrew Brunette said speed − or lack of it − was the main issue.
"We play too slow on the power play," Brunette said. "We play fast everywhere else, but (on the power play) we play really slow."
Andrew Brunette's high speed system not translating to power play
The Predators' offense under Brunette is built on speed, and so far the results are promising. Brunette has improved the team's goals scored per game from 2.72 last season to 3.27.
Brunette's system has manufactured high scoring seasons from key players like Filip Forsberg, Gustav Nyquist, and Roman Josi, but so far the power play has been a disappointment. Entering Tuesday night, the unit ranked 19th in the league with a 20.2% success rate.
"We're trying to work on it," Brunette said. "But there's games where we just get slow for some reason."
This is not an uncommon problem for teams that use speed as their primary tactic. Once the ice gets "cut in half" on the power play, teams must rely on accuracy, skill, and quick decision making to get the job done.
CLINCHED? Here's what needs to happen for the Nashville Predators to clinch a playoff spot this week
Though the team has focused many practice sessions on improving the power play, for whatever reason, this Predators team struggles to remain consistent on the man advantage.
"Moving pieces in and out, it's just not flowing right now. Been that way for a big chunk of the year."
