6 WRs 49ers could trade for after Brandon Aiyuk injury

The San Francisco 49ers calculus at the trade deadline may have changed following a season-ending ACL injury for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs according to a report from Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.

Losing Aiyuk, a 2023 Second-Team All-Pro who led the 49ers in receiving the last two seasons, is a significant blow that alters the way San Francisco needs to operate ahead of the November 5 trade deadline. While there are some other positions to address, the 49ers don't have a ton of reliable depth at wide receiver.

Deebo Samuel is still atop the depth chart with Jauan Jennings behind him. After that it's a pair of rookies in Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, journeyman veteran Chris Conley, and the much-maligned second-year WR Ronnie Bell.

Adding another top-of-the-depth-chart WR may be imperative to the 49ers' success this season. Here are a few realistic trade options and a couple of pipe dreams for San Francisco:

DeAndre Hopkins, Tennessee Titans

Hopkins is certainly the most accomplished potential trade target, but his production on a bad Titans club this year hasn't been good. In six games he has 15 catches for 173 yards and one touchdown. He's not a great separator and it's worth questioning just how much he has left as a productive player. On the other hand, he's still exceptional in contested catch situations and he would quickly be a go-to target for Purdy.

Kendrick Bourne, New England Patriots

Bourne's name was included in trade rumors surrounding Aiyuk during the preseason. The former 49ers undrafted free agent signing has returned from a torn ACL and posted four catches for 29 yards in three games with the Patriots. Bourne's best football may be behind him, but he'd be a plug-and-play option who knows the offense well enough to fill in as an adequate third or fourth receiver.

Christian Kirk, Jacksonville Jaguars

Kirk's availability may depend on how the Jaguars perceive their chances to contend for a playoff spot in 2024. He has one year left on his deal after this one with no guaranteed money. He hasn't been awesome in Jacksonville, but he's probably fallen short of their expectations when they signed him to a four-year, $72 million deal in the 2022 offseason. This year Kirk has 25 catches for 320 yards and one touchdown, and he'd fit in nicely with San Francisco as No. 2 or 3 WR with Aiyuk out.

Jakobi Meyers, Las Vegas Raiders

It's not totally clear what the Raiders' plans are under new general manager Tom Telesco. They may covet the 27-year-old Meyers as a foundational piece of their receiving corps moving forward. He's also a free agent after next season with no guaranteed money left, and the Raiders could easily be on the hunt for draft capital to help a rebuild. Meyers has been a good player in his one-plus seasons with Vegas, posting 96 catches for 1,080 yards and nine touchdowns in five games.

Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints

We said there'd be some pipe dreams. Here's one. Olave is on Year 3 of his rookie contract. He's an exceptional young receiver who should be part of the Saints' plans for the foreseeable future no matter what their quarterback situation looks like. However, the 49ers would be wise to do due diligence and see if there's a price the Saints would accept for the No. 11 overall pick in the 2022 draft. Olave hasn't had a great year with 280 yards and a touchdown on 23 catches, but he had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons to open his career. Landing Olave would mean the 49ers landed a new No. 1 WR.

Garrett Wilson, New York Jets

Another pipe dream! This one is even bigger. The 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year is very likely not available for trade, but San Francisco should be doing due diligence the same way they should with Olave. Wilson has 46 catches for 460 yards and three touchdowns this year and remains one of the best receivers in the NFL. If for some reason quarterback Aaron Rodgers requires a different WR across from Davante Adams, the 49ers should be on the phone ensuring they're in the discussion to acquire one of the brightest young stars at the position.
