6 Saints on the roster bubble who need a big game vs. 49ers
As we enter into this weekend's New Orleans Saints preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, the sense of urgency starts to ramp up for guys on the roster bubble. With only two preseason games left, many players on the team will need to step up to the plate this Sunday if they want to be considered when for the final 53 roster spots.
The players that are listed here are players who seem to be just on the outside looking in, when it comes to their position groups. This means that with a standout performance in these games, there's a possibility of a final push to make the roster.
Here are six players on the roster bubble who need a big game this weekend:
TE Michael Jacobson
Jacobson has been a player who has made quite a few plays this summer along with rookie Dallin Holker. However, the Saints will likely keep only one of these two players and Holker seems to have the edge at the moment. Jacobson will need to have a solid game this week to keep himself in the running, but he's dealing with a foot injury that could slow him down.
RB James Robinson
James Robinson is a guy who needs to make the most out of his opportunities now. With Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller both sidelined at the moment, Robinson needs to prove that he can be a capable number three back at the least. At the moment, it looks as if fellow back Jordan Mims is ahead of Robinson which means he has an uphill battle to climb before the end of the preseason.
LB Anfernee Orji
Linebacker is a position that is solidified at their top three spots with Demario Davis, Pete Werner and Willie Gay, which means that they have two or three spots remaining to fill there. Orji has played well this summer so far while competing with veterans Khaleke Hudson and D'Marco Jackson as well as rookie Jaylan Ford for the back half of this depth chart. He too will need to continue his progression in these next few weeks to find himself on the team.
DT Kendal Vickers
Vickers' position as a defensive tackle for the Saints makes it hard for him to make the squad. With the top three or four spots pretty sewn up, the Saints would likely have to keep a fifth player at this position to make way for Vickers. His competition right now is rookie sixth round pick Khristian Boyd who seems like the comfortable fourth defensive tackle at the moment. Vickers would have to put on a show to pave his way into a spot.
S Roderic Teamer
Teamer just might have one of the best opportunities to make the team because of the position he plays. The depth at safety is one of the weakest on the team at the moment and head coach Dennis Allen's recent comments made that very evident. With no sure starter outside of Tyrann Mathieu, Teamer could possibly find himself in the rotation and make an impact on special teams.
WR Samson Nacua
All offseason and now into training camp, we've been wondering who is going to round out the wide receiver group. With Bub Means, Equanimious St.Brown and now fast-rising Mason Tipton all missing time with injury, Samson Nucua has a chance to surpass these guys if he can build off of his recent performances, including last weeks preseason game.
