5 standouts from first two weeks of FSU football spring season practices
Florida State football's spring season has featured four practices and a scrimmage.
Five weeks of spring practices conclude with a Spring Showcase on Saturday, April 20 at 4 p.m. at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Here are five players who have stood out two weeks into the spring season.
Shyheim Brown, DB
Not only has Brown has elevated his game from last season, he's emerging as a leader. The redshirt junior has led by example and vocally.
During 1-on-1, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, Brown has disrupted the flow of the offense and led an impressive start from the secondary.
In 14 games last season, Brown recorded 53 tackles, two sacks and four pass breakups. Those numbers should improve this season.
Brown has motivated teammates with his boisterous, spirited play. Any time he or a fellow defensive back records a pass breakup, Brown celebrates.
However, he also offers words of encouragement when needed.
One of the moments that stood out was when wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs, the intended target on an incomplete pass, was frustrated. Brown helped calm him down.
Norvell has spoken highly of how much Brown loves this team and teammates.
Jaylin Lucas, RB
Lucas has made an immediate impact among the transfers.
The former Indiana running back has displayed flashes on offense and special teams.
During 7-on-7 drills, where he has had space to run, Lucas has found openings with his vision and speed, a trait that has impressed teammates. He has also displayed the ability to break tackles for long gains.
Last season with the Hoosiers Lucas, rushed for 275 yards and two touchdowns, and 572 punt return yards and a touchdown.
He is going to be a fun player to watch this season and should be a threat on special teams.
Azareye'h Thomas, DB
The secondary has dominated in the first two weeks and a lot of that can be credited to the emergence of Thomas.
Totaling 29 tackles and 10 PBUs as a sophomore, Norvell said he expected Thomas to make a jump this spring.
Early on he was a big reason why the receivers struggled, especially when pads were added to practice on March 21.
While the receivers have adjusted, Thomas and the secondary haven been relentless. Thomas credits his play to mental focus and work ethic.
Thomas has a major opportunity to impress at the spring showcase and compete for a starting spot.
With the departures of Jarrian Jones, Renardo Green and Akeem Dent, Thomas has the chance to be a key player in the secondary.
Brock Glenn, QB
As expected - and hoped for - transfer DJ Uiagalelei has stood out this spring. However, Glenn has displayed growth and confidence since last season.
Last season, Glenn threw for just 229 yards, competing 19-of-51 attempts and no touchdowns. He rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown in a 66-13 win over Southern Miss.
In two weeks of spring practices, he has looked more confident and comfortable and displayed a strong arm.
Uiagalelei has favored the long ball in practices and Glenn has followed suit. The pair has also worked well together. Glenn said he has helped Uiagalelei learn the playbook while Uiagalelei has offered Glenn advice from his experiences.
After Jordan Travis was lost to injury late last season, FSU's backup quarterbacks struggled. Considering how Glenn has looked early on, the Seminoles should have a sound and talented backup this season.
Darion Williamson, WR
There are plenty of questions about the wide receiver room this offseason.
With Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson declaring for the NFL Draft, there are two huge voids at the starting positions.
While Kentron Poitier and Alabama transfer Malik Benson have been two popular names to step in as starters, Williamson, a redshirt senior, has nudged his name into that conversation.
Last season, he had nine receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown. He has enjoyed a great start to the spring, making a handful of impressive catches in one session.
Williamson has been one of the more consistent receivers in practices. If that trend continues, he should compete for a starting spot this season.
