5 must-see Oklahoma City-area high school girls basketball games to watch this week

Several key district matchups highlight the Oklahoma high school girls basketball schedule as the calendar turns from January to February.

Here’s a look at The Oklahoman’s must-see games for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

Class 6A Norman (10-7 overall, 5-4 District 6A-2) at Class 6A Edmond Santa Fe (10-6, 6-3 District 6A-2)

When: 6 p.m. Tuesday

Edmond Santa Fe and Norman enter this matchup as the No. 3 and No. 4 teams, respectively, in their district. The Wolves stormed past Norman, 51-33, in early December, but the young Tigers have had time to grow. Norman junior guard Keeley Parks is an ESPN-ranked recruit who holds the program’s single-game record of 51 points. Edmond Santa Fe draws leadership from senior center Jerney Bennett, who recently led the Wolves to a 58-53 upset of Putnam West.

Class 6A Owasso (13-4, 6-2 District 6A-3) at Class 6A Edmond Memorial (13-3, 7-1 District 6A-3)

When: 6 p.m. Tuesday

When these programs met in December, Edmond Memorial squeezed out a 56-51 overtime victory. Now, the Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in District 6A-3, and No. 2 Owasso seeks a resume boost after dropping two straight games. The Rams will have to contend with a lineup of talented guards featuring junior Janiyah Williams, who scored 32 points in last week’s loss to Edmond North.

Class 3A Bethel (10-7) at Class 3A Jones (13-4)

When: 6:15 p.m. Tuesday

These teams most recently collided in last year’s Class 3A semifinals, where the Longhorns claimed a 65-54 win on the way to their third consecutive state title. Their lineups have changed, but both teams are ranked in Class 3A’s top 10. Junior guard Josie Megehee stands out for No. 10 Bethel, while No. 4 Jones’ cast of stars includes Kneah Smith, Sofi Woodson and Kasia Hansen.

Class 6A Bixby (14-4, 8-1 District 6A-4) at Class 6A Choctaw (17-0, 9-0 District 6A-4)

When: 6:30 p.m. Friday

With Edmond North and Putnam West losing their undefeated streaks, Choctaw is the last unbeaten team in Class 6A. Can the Spartans play spoiler? The Yellowjackets defeated Bixby, 43-39, in a December overtime game, so the opponents are closely matched. Senior guard/forward Kate Davis, an Oklahoma Baptist signee, is having a stellar season for Choctaw.

Class 6A Putnam North (14-3, 7-1 District 6A-1) at Class 6A Edmond North (13-1, 7-0 District 6A-1)

When: 4 p.m. Saturday

This game was supposed to happen earlier, but winter weather pushed it to Saturday. Although the Huskies rolled past Putnam North, 49-29, in their season opener, the Panthers are gaining momentum. Putnam West proved Edmond North isn’t invincible, but the Huskies are back on track after that loss.

Key matchup outside the OKC metro

Class 5A Tulsa Booker T. Washington (10-5, 7-0 District 5A-3) at Class 5A Tahlequah (16-1, 8-0 District 5A-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday: These are the top two teams in District 5A-3. Tahlequah won the previous matchup against the Hornets by four points. Since it was at the Tahlequah Invitational, it didn't count as a district game.
