49ers training camp takeaway: Hard to ignore 2nd-year WR
It's hard to take much away from Sunday's session at San Francisco 49ers training camp.
After a long, grueling Saturday session, the team practiced Sunday in a lighter day without pads on. The lack of contact makes it harder to assess exactly who's winning and who's losing the day. Sunday there was at least one clear winner though as wide receiver Ronnie Bell continues making his case for a roster spot.
Bell has had a couple of notable performances in this year's camp. We can add Sunday to the list.
In the team portion of Sunday's practice, Bell made the first of two terrific grabs. The first one was a leaping catch in traffic on a throw from quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
Dobbs left the throw up and behind Bell, but the receiver reached back and made the catch while getting upended in midair. He held onto the pass and was shaken up some after a hard fall. Bell got up and made his way back to the offensive side without missing snaps.
The 2023 seventh-round pick showed up again in the 'move the ball' period. He made a tough catch in traffic with rookie cornerback Renardo Green in coverage. It looked like Bell might have not had full control at first, but he managed to corral it through contact for a first-down catch.
Given Bell's continued work in the return game and his special teams contributions last year, there was always a path to a roster spot for him. If he can keep stacking good offensive days, it'll only get harder to justify keeping him off the team at final cuts.
