The San Francisco 49ers will open their preseason Saturday evening against the Tennessee Titans.
Teams never get through a training camp without making at least minor tweaks to their 90-man roster. For the 49ers, the lead-up to their first preseason matchup of the year has come with a slew of roster maneuvers to account for a lack of availability at certain positions.
While it's not ideal to thrust new players into a game situation on the fly, minor moves on the margins are much more palatable than, say, trading an All-Pro wide receiver in the middle of camp. There are also a handful of players missing either on injured lists or because of holdouts. Trent Williams, for example, is not technically on the 90-man roster because he's on the reserve/did not report list.
The 90-man maximum roster will remain intact until final cuts on August 27 when teams have to trim their groups to 53.
With moves all done and the 49ers finally in Nashville for their first game action of the 2024 campaign, here's a position-by-position look at their 90-man roster (names listed alphabetically, rookies in bold):
C.J. Gardner-Johnson made it clear the NFC East runs through Philly, which looks like the case this season even if it hasn't always been the case in the recent past.
The Dodgers have been interested in Adames and even with Mookie Betts moving back to the infield, Adames would make sense in L.A. Other teams that could make a run at him include the Giants and Braves.
The tone is certainly different as this hot stove season commences considering L.A.'s campaign ended on the ultimate high note, but that’s not to say the Dodgers won’t be busy.
Nate Tice and Charles McDonald kick off this monster episode by previewing the biggest matchups of an enticing Week 11 slate of NFL games by giving one (or two or three) things to watch in each. Later, Nate is joined by the Athletic's draft guru himself Dane Brugler to deep dive on the 2025 NFL Draft. The duo give strengths and weaknesses of the class and favorite players at each position before diving into their latest big boards and comparing key prospects to keep an eye on.
