There's been another change in the dynamic between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers are now willing to take calls about an Aiyuk trade. This marks a significant change from the 49ers' side.

At first, the team only allowed Aiyuk to negotiate a new contract with four teams. NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported those four teams included the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers. Maiocco also reported the 49ers worked out the framework for deals with the Browns and Patriots.

Now they're expanding the reach of their search for a trade partner.

This is still a little bit sticky because the 49ers are going to require significant compensation in an Aiyuk trade. To give up the compensation the 49ers desire, a team would have to have some assurance Aiyuk was going to sign an extension with them.

That means the steps remain the same.

There needs to be a deal the 49ers like. Then Aiyuk has to negotiate a contract with that team, and be willing to sign with that club. San Francisco taking calls is just expanding their search.

Perhaps the 49ers are fed up and want Aiyuk out of the building. However, this could also be viewed as a negotiating tactic by San Francisco. They're publicly letting Aiyuk know that he could be shipped off to any team in the NFL since, in theory, a team could trade for him without knowing if he'll re-sign.

Typically, this kind of posturing happens before the draft. The 49ers' unwillingness to budge off their contract offer for Aiyuk early in the offseason helped push these negotiations into training camp. Now they're in the midst of camp with a preseason game coming, and they're trying to sort out the most complicated contract negotiation they've had since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch arrived.

The worst part?

There's no real end in sight.
