49ers backup RB wins, star WR loses in Week 1 victory
The San Francisco 49ers didn't waste any time showing they didn't have any type of Super Bowl hangover, dominating Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets in the regular season opener on Monday night.
Despite missing Christian McCaffrey, Kyle Shanahan's offense rolled behind Jordan Mason and Deebo Samuel. Defensively, the 49ers stifled the Jets, keeping their star trio of Aaron Rodgers, Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall quiet all night.
Behind touchdowns from Samuel and Mason along with six field goals from Jake Moody, the 49ers cruised to a 32-19 win to start the season.
Here's a look at some of the standout performers from Monday's win in Santa Clara.
Winner: RB Jordan Mason
It's nearly impossible to replace a player of Christian McCaffrey's caliber. However, with the star running back ruled out before kickoff due to an ankle/Achilles injury, the 49ers offense didn't seam to miss a beat, and a lot of that was thanks to Jordan Mason.
Along with the regular-season opener, Monday night served as Mason's arrival to the national NFL scene. Mason lived up to the training camp hype, rushing for a career-high 147 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Even more than what the numbers show, the Georgia Tech product punished the Jets' defense with tough run after tough run.
While there's no doubt it's still McCaffrey's backfield, it's also clear Mason has deservingly earned a role in Kyle Shanahan's offense.
Loser: WR Brandon Aiyuk
After a drama-filled offseason, that included an extended training camp holdout and lucrative extension, Brandon Aiyuk's first game of the 2024 season was underwhelming. In the first half, Aiyuk only secured one catch for 14 yards. Aiyuk's first-half performance was defined by a drop in the corner of the endzone with just seconds on the clock in the second quarter. Purdy fluttered a strike into a place where only Aiyuk could catch it. Yet, Aiyuk dropped the pass at the end of the half, forcing the 49ers to settle for a field goal.
In the second half, Aiyuk continued to look rusty, registering just one more catch for 12 yards. Aiyuk finished Week 1 with two catches for 28 yards. Last season, Aiyuk only had one week with less than 28 yards receiving.
Winner: 49ers OL
Heading into the season, you could point towards the 49ers offensive line as one of their few weaknesses. Especially with the absence of All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams through most of training camp. However, on Monday night, the offensive line unit was a strength.
The 49ers offensive line dominated a Jets defensive front that includes Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. Dominick Puni, Jake Brendel and Aaron Banks continue to pave the way for Mason on the inside. The 49ers rammed the ball up the middle against the Jets multiple times.
Behind the bigs up front, the 49ers ran the ball 38 times for 180 yards. Mason ran for 5.3 yards per game.
Winner: CB Isaac Yiadom
Throughout the preseason, rookie Renardo Greene and veterans Rock Ya-Sin and Isaac Yiadom have been battling for a featured role in the 49ers secondary.
On Monday night, Yiadom separated himself with an impressive performance. Late in the game with the Jets driving, Yiadom came up with a big pass breakup against Garrett Wilson on fourth down to essentially slam the door shut on any chance of a late comeback for New York.
Wilson was limited to six catches for 60 yards against Yiadom and the 49ers secondary on Monday night in Santa Clara.
Winner: K Jake Moody
It's easy to jump on the kicker when they shank a kick. Yet, when they knock in six field goals, they deserve all the credit. Jake Moody got the 49ers going in the 2024 season, scoring the field points of the new year with a 46-yarder. Moody tacked on five more field goals, including a pair of kicks from beyond 50 yards.
In the opening game of the season, Moody started the season strong, burying six field goals along with being perfect on extra points.
Winner: DC Nick Sorensen
Monday night marked the debut of Nick Sorenson as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.
In his first game calling defensive plays from the sideline, Sorenson's defensive unit limited Aaron Rodgers to only 167 yards with a touchdown pass, an interception and an 82.8 passer rating. Only eight quarterbacks in all of the NFL finished Week 1 with a lower passer rating.
The 49ers defense also forced two turnovers. Fred Warner punched a fumble free from Breece Hall and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles picked off Rodgers on a tip drill.
