4 takeaways from the second week of Seahawks training camp
We have completed two weeks of training camp for the Seattle Seahawks. As we inch closer and closer to football's return, we cannot help but consume any bit of news coming from camp. The Seahawks are entering into an exciting new era, filled with plenty of potential.
With that in mind, let us go through the top 4 takeaways from this past week.
Seahawks avoid injury disaster with Geno Smith
The Seahawks got lucky when it came to their starting quarterback Geno Smith. Last week, Smith went in for an MRI to examine nagging knee and hip injuries. This came after Smith missed two practices, following a strong first week of training camp. Fortunately, the MRI yielded positive results. Although Smith did miss one final practice last week, he is not expected to miss much time.
Talk about a dodged bullet.
Seattle's offense is going to showcase versatility
The Seahawks' offensive roster boasts far too many talented players for it to be as inconsistent as it was last year. Having the likes of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, JSN, Kenneth Walker III, Zach Charbonnet, and Noah Fant is a dream come true for any offensive coordinator. Unfortunately, Seattle failed to establish any semblance of an identy last year. I suspect this won't be the problem under the creative leadership of Ryan Grubb.
Fant himself took to the media to praise how versatile this offense is going to be with Grubb at the helm.
"The versatility of our offense is through the roof," Fant declared. "So it's one of those things that, yeah, it's great for me, but it's great for our offense as a whole, so I think that's going to be really beneficial to us doing well on the field."
Fant continued by saying "my favorite thing about it is just everybody being able to get into their positions that they're really good at being able to do the things that they're really good at, use their speed, use their change of direction, use all these things. You can tell that he has really put some thought into where he wants guys to be put at and what positions they'll succeed in."
The secondary battles are living up to the hype
One of the position battles that received top billing for "must see" during training camp was among the cornerbacks. The Seahawks added a pair of corners from Auburn to compete among the established veterans. So far, this group is living up to the hype. Riq Woolen is gearing up for a bounce back season, Tre Brown is continuing to make plays, and even the rookie Nehemiah Pritchett is showcasing why the Seahawks drafted him despite being full at the position.
Mike Macdonald runs a tight ship
There is a distinct culture shift at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Pete Carroll was famous for his loose demeanor, allowing players to have more fun at practice and vibe out. This is not the case with Mike Macdonald, who is not offering similar levels of leeway to his team.
It feels as if Macdonald's style is more blunt, direct, akin to a firm but fair teacher. Seattle is in dire need of a discipline recalibration for 2024, and it seems Macdonald is the one to help deliver.
