3 thoughts on what Mike Norvell said after Florida State football practice Thursday
It's a new month of Florida State football as the countdown to Week 0 against Georgia Tech is underway.
The season opener may be around the corner, but the Seminoles are still trying to find their offensive rhythm. Defense, on the other hand, continues to be the driving force on all cylinders.
FSU will run its first scrimmage on Saturday in about 48 hours and is plugging plays to prepare for that weekend.
Here's what FSU coach Mike Norvell has to say.
Mike Norvell wants offense to take advantage of opportunities
FSU's defense got the best of the offense on FSU's seventh practice. Norvell believed he saw that both sides had their moments during camp. However, Norvell wants his offense to take it up a notch.
“Obviously, the defense did a lot of good things today, but we've seen a good balance throughout fall camp," Norvell said. "I thought the offense, we just got to need to be better and get opportunities. That's something you we going to take advantage."
The Seminoles continue to struggle with consistency on the pass offense. The receivers struggled to make catches and struggled to execute plays against the defense.
Mike Norvell gives thoughts on offensive guard Keiondre Jones, D-lineman Tomiwa Durojaiye
The positive not on offense was the offensive line. As the competition battle for the guard spot is up in the air, Norvell was asked about offensive guard Keiondre Jones. Entering his second year with the Seminoles after transferring from Auburn, Norvell expects the redshirt senior to take another leap at guard.
“The work he's put in, I think that you see the second-year growth," Norvell said. "I mean he played good football and played a solid amount for us a year ago, but you see that, him taking another step."
On the defensive front, he was asked about West Virginia transfer Tomiwa Durojaiye. He went into detail on Durojaiye and his development after joining the Seminoles earlier in the year.
"Tomy is very active and very versatile," Norvell said.
"He's done a great job with his body throughout the summer. I think he'll give us great production as long as he can continue to focus on discipline and the details of the reps.
" I think he's doing a lot of learning, but I think both of those guys are what we're hoping to bring. You see those traits, and now it's just continuing to build consistency."
What to expect from Florida State football’s first scrimmage
FSU will run its first 11-on-11 scrimmage on Saturday. With one week of practice under their belts, Norvell looks forward to seeing what his Seminoles look like.
"We're going to go through basically how we've done with our first scrimmage," Norvell said. "I want to see our guys be able to do a lot of different things in situations I want to put them in and see how they respond to that, and we'll have a good work day."
The FSU scrimmage will be closed to the public.
