2024 5-star UNC commit selected for Nike Hoops Summit
For how much talent the UNC men’s basketball program is expected to lose after this season, it’s gaining a lot in the 2024 recruiting class.
At the top of that list is local Northwood High School product Drake Powell, who’s hoping to lead his Chargers to their first NCHSAA State Championship in six tries. Powell is a lockdown defender, speedy guard/forward combo who can sprint to the rim for thunderous dunks, plus a spot-up shooter who can knock it down from anywhere.
Chicago, Ill.-based center James Brown is a 4-star center who’s expected to push Jalen Washington for starting minutes next year. Brown is playing at basketball powerhouse Link Academy, which just won the GEICO Nationals last year.
The third and final incoming commit in the 2024 recruiting class is 5-star Ian Jackson, a Long Island (NY) product who’s playing at Our Savior Lutheran School in The Bronx. Jackson is a talented, 6’4″ shooting guard who’s expected to fill RJ Davis’ spot.
After Jackson’s high school season wraps up, he’ll be heading to the Nike Hoops Summit in April. This event showcases some of the country’s best high school talent, pinning them against the world’s best players ages 19 and under.

It’s tough not to look ahead to next year, but all the current focus in Chapel Hill is on capturing National Championship number seven.
When the 2024-2025 campaign comes, Jackson will look to continue helping UNC remain a household name and amongst the ACC’s best.
