Emily Cave Boit worried her late husband former NHL player Colby Cave would be “mad” at her for “moving forward” with her life. On Monday, the 31-year-old author took to Instagram with a heartfelt message to Cave who died in 2020 from a brain bleed when he was 25 years old.

Cave Boit shared a photo of herself and her late husband with a lengthy post dedicated to Cave, reflecting on the last four and half years since his death. The Barrie, Ont. native said she knows Cave would be grateful to everyone who has “loved and supported” her since his death.

“I used to worry that you would be mad at me for moving forward, which makes no sense because you did not have one mean bone in your body,” she wrote.

Cave Boit said her late husband was “probably bragging” about her and their dog, Chester, in heaven. “You were always so proud and vocalized it so well.”

The “You Are More with Emily Cave Boit” podcast thought of the “horrific morning” that Cave didn’t wake up and was rushed into emergency brain surgery to remove a colloid cyst that caused a brain bleed. He was put into a medically-induced coma and died in hospital on April 11, 2024. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Cave Boit was unable to be with her husband when he died.

“I will never forgive myself for not being able to save you,” Cave Boit wrote. “I will carry that with me for the rest of my life. I’m so sorry. Days like these feel like a merry-go-round of flashbacks. It brings back so many triggered emotions. But it reminds me of how far I have come, I owe it all to you. You gave me the strength to keep going when I didn’t think I could.”

“Thank you for not only taking care of me during your time on earth but continuing to take care of me from heaven too…I hope you know you will never be forgotten," she continued. "I hope you know how missed you are. But most importantly, I hope you know how loved you are. Forever.”

Cave Boit’s post prompted supportive messages from followers.

“You’ve made it through so much Em,” someone wrote. “He’s so proud of you, and you’re so loved.”

“You are such an inspiration to so many,” another said. “Your strength is unmatched.”

Cave Boit remarried Colin Boit in June 2024 in a Malibu wedding. The pair met online after Cave Boit was encouraged by friends to start dating a year after his death.

"I would get mad because it was like, 'Do you not get it? Do you not understand that I had this whole life planned and within a second it was gone?' I was like, 'I just can't do that,'' Cave Boit said in an interview with Yahoo Canada.

It took time for her to have the courage to try online dating, but she knew she had met someone special with Colin. Cave Boit remembers telling friends that Colby "would be impressed" with Colin.

"I wouldn't be married to Colin today if it weren't for Colby," she said. "Colby is part of the story of my life and I will always be very protective of him. The relationship doesn't just stop. The way I see it, I'm fortunate to have a husband in heaven and a husband on earth."
