Donald and Melania Trump slammed for 'hypocritical' Labour Day post

Donald Trump observed Labour Day on Monday by tweeting a seemingly innocuous photo of him and Melania, alongside a message about America’s future.

“We are building our future with American hands, American labour, American iron, aluminum and steel. Happy #LaborDay!”

Although the president has been vocal about his “two simple rules” when it comes to the country’s massive rebuild effort, buy American and hire American, people were quick to note that Melania’s $2,255 USD grid print A-line dress was made in Italy by London-based Greek designer Mary Katrantzou.

The sleeveless, multicolour geometric print frock nips in at the waist, features a hidden back zipper and is made of French material.

In actuality, the photo was taken from a picnic back in June, so Melania likely didn’t choose to wear the specific dress for the post — but it’s just one of a string of fashion incidents that has caused controversy in recent weeks.

Last Tuesday, Melania travelled with the president to Texas to assess damage done by Hurricane Harvey. When exiting the White House for Marine One, reporters couldn’t help but critique her ensemble — black cropped pants, a green bomber jacket and black stilettos.

“God grant me the serenity not to comment on the shoes,” POLITICO writer Ben White tweeted.

While a politics reporter for the Wall Street Journal tweeted: “Melania is wearing stilettos to a hurricane zone.”

Days later, on Sept. 2, as Melania and Trump made another visit to hurricane-ravaged Houston, the first lady received some flack as she walked across the White House lawn in towering stilettos yet again.

By the time the couple reached Ellington Field, Melania changed into to something slightly more sensible: a denim shirt, fitted trousers and low-top sneakers.
