This $32 Million Penthouse in N.Y.C.’s Midtown Is the Work of an Olympic Torch Designer
Just like a fire flickering on an Olympic torch, this sky-high duplex sits on the top floor of this luxe building in N.Y.C. And it’s a fitting image: The penthouse has interiors by Mathieu Lehanneur, the award-winning French designer behind the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch.
The $32.5 million crown jewel, which doubles as an exhibition space, is perched atop Selene New York, a luxury condo on East 53rd Street by Foster + Partners. Lehanneur imagined its 6,760-square-feet of living space as his Parisian studio pied-à-terre for the design. It draws inspiration from natural elements like air, water, and fire for a “dynamic and layered experience,” according to a press release. Four bedrooms and four full baths spread across its two levels next to stunning vistas of the Big Apple skyline and beyond.

A private elevator landing opens to the penthouse’s grand entrance gallery. Here, double-height ceilings of up to 11 feet show off views from the East River to the Atlantic Ocean. Floor-to-ceiling windows trail its corner great room, which houses a number of quirky light fixtures—including a floral-inspired piece and a multi-sphere design—along with wood flooring. Central Park Tower, the world’s tallest residential building, can be spotted along the skyline as well.
Heading into the kitchen, you’ll find oak cabinetry and Gaggenau appliances, as well as an Italian Carrara marble countertop and backsplash. Views of landmark buildings like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building can be seen right from the formal dining room, which seats eight but could treat even larger groups to unobstructed sunset views for celebrations. Lehanneur’s colorful furniture placements and display of the Olympic torch (not included) add a nice touch to the abode.
Heading upstairs, the triple-exposure primary suite is located on the upper level with a spa-like ensuite that features heated Silver Striato travertine floors and a custom Apaiser soaking tub. Another three beds can be found on the floor, too, each with their own bathroom that offers up custom Apaiser counters and those travertine floors.
The penthouse marks the launch of a long-term exhibition and relationship program Lehanneur will spearhead over the next few years, dubbed the Pied-à-Terre series. It aims to achieve global expansion for the designer’s business, so you can expect new residences to pop up in various U.S. cities over time.

“Starting this new chapter in the USA is a natural progression,” says Isabela Rennó Braga, partner and CEO at Mathieu Lehanneur. “We’re thrilled to establish this platform as a new gateway to deeper, bespoke, and meaningful experiences with our clients and guests.”
The Corcoran Group holds the listing.
