NHL trade deadline: Jets acquire Nino Niederreiter from Predators

The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Nino Niederreiter from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick on Saturday, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Niederreiter, 30, has 18 goals and 28 points in 56 games this season. Niederreiter signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Nashville after spending the previous four seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes.

In 788 career NHL games split between the Predators, Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders, Niederreiter has recorded 199 goals and 197 assists. The Chur, Switzerland native was selected by the Islanders with the fifth-overall pick of the 2010 NHL Draft.

The Predators currently find themselves in fifth place in the Central Division, and seven points outside of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Nashville's struggles have mostly come on the offensive end, as they currently boast the league's seventh-worst offence, with only 163 goals scored.

Meanwhile, the Jets will hope Niederreiter can give their 17th-ranked offence a boost as they set their eyes on a deep playoff run. Winnipeg currently sits in second place in the Central with 71 points, only one point behind the division-leading Dallas Stars.
