Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers follow.

Deadpool & Wolverine may have had plenty of cameos, but one of the familiar faces had a lasting impact on the ending of the film.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe film, the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise, saw the titular superheroes – played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively – team up to stop the dangerous Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) as she threatens the fabric of the galaxy.

The ending of the film sees the pair lock hands as they destroy the Time Ripper, with their fates being left unknown for a few moments as the slippery Mr Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) attempts to cover his tracks with an impassioned speech before the duo stride in side-by-side.

In a commentary on the film’s physical release, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy shared that the original ending had the heroes’ fates revealed much earlier, with Reynolds’s wife Blake Lively – who starred as Ladypool – being credited for the idea of a revamped conclusion.

“We did just a day-and-a-half of reshoots on the movie, which we're very proud of,” explained Reynolds (via GamesRadar). “These kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots. But this speech that Matthew has is one of the pieces that we reshot. And he is miraculous.”

“Credit where credit is due,” added Levy. “It used to be that there was no suspense – the power room blew up, and our heroes had survived. It was Blake who said to us, 'You know, I've been with you this whole movie. I want to sit in the fear that they're lost. Let me be in that place of suspense so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral.’

“That was a Blake note and it really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie and it's why we did this reshoot… and, here, the payoff is so much more satisfying,” he continued.
