Yahoo Autos Mini Introduces First-Ever John Cooper Works EVs with 255 HP
Mini debuted the first-ever John Cooper Works Electric and John Cooper Aceman.
Both models arrive with identical electric powertrains making 255 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
We don't expect either model to be sold in the United States anytime soon.
Hot-hatch fans unite! Mini has introduced a pair of electric performance models to run alongside the gasoline-powered John Cooper Works editions. The new JCW Electric and JCW Aceman are the first EVs from Mini to get the John Cooper Works treatment.
Despite the Aceman not wearing the EV moniker, both hatches are powered by electrons and share the same powertrain. Both cars feature a 54.2-kWh (gross capacity) battery and generate 255 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque from a lone electric motor that powers the front wheels. According to Mini, the standard John Cooper Works Electric sprints from zero to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, while the Aceman requires 6.4.
Both cars have a Go-Kart mode that unlocks an additional 27 horsepower achieved with a switch on the steering wheel. That additional power boost can be used for overtaking and is necessary to achieve the claimed top speed of 124 mph. According to Mini, the standard JCW is good for 231 miles of range on Europe's optimistic WLTP cycle; the Aceman earned a rating of 221 miles. Mini says that both models combine "the tradition and character of the MINI brand" with the electric architecture. They also both earn John Cooper Works-specific suspension and summer tires.
Unfortunately for our North American hot hatch fans, we don't expect either John Cooper Works model to make its way to our side of the pond. At least, not at first. That's because Mini is planning to build the cars exclusively in China until 2026 when production will start in the United Kingdom.
