Luftgekühlt, the Porsche-pa-looza put on by two-time Le Mans winner Patrick Long, creative director Howie Idelson, and a host of dedicated volunteers just celebrated its tenth anniversary Oct. 5 with another giant show spread out across 420 acres of Universal Studios backlot.

“As the antidote to the traditional, we upend the golf course concours with a car party anyone will savor,” Luftgekühlt says on its website.

And savor it we all did, wandering through Univeral’s one-sided city streets, faux French villages, ersatz Mexican border towns, and all manner of Hollywood intrigue that normally you can only see from the tram-borne tour led by Babs the tour guide (“To your left you will see the very spot Vin Diesel sold his soul to the devil!”)

Luft did this same exact setup four years ago for Luft 6, and at that time we wondered how they could possibly top it.

Turns out they couldn’t, so they just did it again, and it was just as much fun. I mean, if you really wanted to complain you could say they just did the same thing twice, but if the same thing was this cool (Luftgekühl) you really can’t complain.

If you missed this one, fly to Chattanooga Oct 11-13, where another Luftgekühlt
will take place alongside the Chattanooga Motorcar Festival. Or start saving now for the $100 it costs for a ticket for next year’s Luft. Who knows where that will be?
