Jaguar to Pounce with Luxury EV It May Call I-TypeJaguar
  • Jaguar's next life (of nine?) will be as an ultra-luxury EV brand, spearheaded by a new four-door GT car.

  • A trademark application unearthed by Car and Driver suggests it may be called the I-type.

  • Images of a camouflaged prototype released by Jaguar indicate that the new sedan will be similarly sized to competitors such as the Cadillac Celestiq and the Rolls-Royce Spectre.

Jaguar's plans for its reinvention are still somewhat shrouded in mystery, but we now know that its ascension to the ultimate luxury realm—or at least the attempt at such a rise—will begin with the introduction of a new, electric four-door grand tourer. Jaguar released images of a camouflaged prototype undergoing testing on U.K. roads, and from those, we can see the luxury electric sedan will be of the full-size variety. It also features a very long hood and a steeply raked windshield.

A recent U.S. trademark application suggests the name I-type, which makes sense given Jaguar's first EV effort wore the name I-Pace. That SUV model ended production in 2024, and while it made a splash when it debuted, its 240-mile driving range meant it lagged behind newer rivals in more recent years.

Whether or not it gets the name I-type, the new model should offer at least 300 miles of driving per charge, and we suspect it will come with two motors and offer all-wheel drive. Jaguar hasn't commented on the powertrain specs, but we know the car will ride on a new electrical architecture. Pricing is also unknown, but given Jaguar's ambitions to move upmarket, we think it's likely the I-type will require a six-figure outlay.

Moving from selling luxury SUVs in the $70,000 neighborhood to electric sedans in the $200,000 range is a bold move and one that will put the new Jaguar in competition with the likes of the Cadillac Celestiq, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS680 SUV, and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. That will require high-end furnishings, cutting-edge tech, and good performance.

A heavy dose of curb appeal wouldn't hurt either, and we should be getting a taste of Jaguar's new design language soon as the company plans to unveil a concept vehicle during Miami Art Week in December 2024.
