'I saw nothing': Despite jersey over head, Panthers Jonah Gadjovich kept throwing punches at Devils Brenden Dillon

Fights are as much a part of hockey in the NHL as goals and Zambonis.

They don’t happen every game, but fans sure seem to enjoy when a good bout breaks on any given night.

Tuesday in Sunrise, with the Florida Panthers hosting the New Jersey Devils, one such tussle came to be.

It happened during the second period, and it was as unique as it was entertaining.

Dropping the gloves were Florida’s Jonah Gadjovich and the Devils’ Brenden Dillon.

"He stepped up and we were both willing to go," Gadjovich said. "It ended up being a good fight. Nothing but respect for him, and it seemed to get the fans into it."

These are two large men.

Gadjovich measures in at 6-foot-2, 209 lbs. while Dillon comes in at 6-foot-4, 225 lbs.

Aside from the slight size and weight disadvantage, Gadjovich had something else going against him during Tuesday’s tilt.

He couldn’t see.

"I saw nothing," he said with a laugh. "I just buried my head and tried to keep throwing. Sometimes that happens."

Early in the fight, Gadjovich’s jersey came up over his head, but the Florida fighter didn’t let it deter him from throwing punch after punch after punch.

It was pretty amazing to see, with both team’s benches seeming to enjoy the show as much as the fans packed inside Amerant Bank Arena.

"That's an old school'er," Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice said. "The linesmen didn't jump in too early and let two guys hammer away."
