GM Recalls 463K Diesel Models Due to Possible Rear-Wheel Lockup
GM is recalling 461,839 full-size trucks and SUVs with diesel powertrains due to a faulty transmission valve that can cause the rear wheels to lock up.
The recall affects 2020–2022 models, including the Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban; GMC Sierra and Yukon; and Cadillac Escalade.
GM says the issue can be fixed by installing new software for the transmission control module.
There's a potential problem with the transmission control valve on certain diesel-powered GM full-size trucks and SUVs. The defective valve can fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up, which obviously increases the risk of crashing, so GM has filed a recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects 461,839 vehicles with diesel powertrains from the 2020 through 2022 model years. More specifically, the 2020–'22 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500HD, 3500HD pickup trucks. The same goes for the mechanically identical GMC Sierra 1500, 2500HD, and 3500HD. All of GM's full-size SUVs are also included in the recall, but only ones from the 2021 model year. The list includes the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV with the Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline-six.
In its NHTSA filing, GM notes that the transmission control valve in some of the vehicles can wear over time, which can gradually cause the valve to lose pressure. Along with causing harsh shifts, GM also notes the issue can cause the rear wheels to momentarily lock up in rare cases.
The fix requires owners to bring their vehicles to the dealership where new software will be installed for the transmission control module. GM says it will provide a special coverage program so the repair will be completed free of charge. Owners will be notified by mail starting December 9, 2024.
