Yahoo Autos The 2025 Lexus LX Gets More Power, Thanks to the Tundra's Hybrid Engine
The Lexus LX is further upping its flagship status for the 2025 model year, with the help of a hybrid powertrain offering that packs more power — as well as diving even deeper into its off-road roots thanks to an off-road-focused variant.
The LX has always skewed toward luxury, but as the twin of the Toyota Land Cruiser, it's always had the bones to hit the trail if you felt inspired to do so. For 2025, Lexus is fully leaning into the idea with a new Overtrail trim (first seen on the newest Lexus GX), which adds front and rear locking differentials, 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapping 18-inch wheels, a front skid plate, 2,400-watt AC inverter, all-weather floor liners and a dark exterior appearance package. It also unlocks a new “Earth” exterior paint option, and can be paired with a black or "Stone Brown" interior.
If you want the Overtrail, you’ll also need to opt-in to the LX’s other big upgrade for 2025: a hybrid powertrain. Dubbed the LX 700h, it brings more power and better fuel efficiency to the full-size SUV. The 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and electric motor combine for 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque — 48 ponies and 104 pounds of twist more than the LX 600. It even bests the Sequoia and Tundra hybrid, which use the same powerplant, by 20 horsepower.
Lexus estimates the combined fuel economy rating at 20 mpg, which, if official, works out to just a 1-mpg improvement over the non-hybrid. Towing remains the same as the LX 600, maxing out at 8000 pounds.
This hybrid powertrain is notably equipped with both an alternator and a starter, which Lexus says is a first for the brand’s hybrid models. That’s because Lexus wants to ensure the car can still start and drive in the case of a hybrid system failure. The starter allows for independent engine ignition, while the alternator powers the 12-volt battery to keep things running the old-fashioned way.
Lexus says the LX 700h also features a unique “three-cross” frame modification that allows for installation of the hybrid battery in the rear floor and repositions the spare tire to maintain the vehicle’s original departure angle. A new shelf system is used in the cargo area to allow for “flat” storage. The battery itself can be found under the luggage compartment on the two-row, or under the third-row seat if you opt for a three-row LX.
One exclusive feature of the hybrid is a Remote Park option that allows you to perpendicular or parallel park the vehicle via the Lexus app on your phone. It also comes with a center console cool box and rear sunshades as standard equipment. Pricing isn’t available for any 2025 LX yet, but Lexus says it’ll be coming sooner to the car’s sales launch “at the beginning of 2025.”
