  • The 2025 Lexus LX will be offered with a new hybrid powertrain called the LX700h.

  • The LX700h pairs the twin-turbo V-6 with an electric motor for 479 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

  • The LX700h also introduces a new Overtrail trim that adds front and rear electronic locking differentials and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Lexus is modernizing its largest SUV for 2025. Not only does the 2025 Lexus LX gain a new, more capable Overtrail grade (above), packed full of off-roading equipment, but the behemoth will also be offered with a hybrid powertrain for the first time in the form of the LX700h. The Overtrail trim will require selecting the new hybrid setup. The 2025 Lexus LX600 and LX700h luxury SUVs are set to go on sale at the beginning of next year.

Electrical Assistance

The new LX700h takes the twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 from the LX600 and adds an electric motor between the engine and transmission as well as a nickel-metal hydride battery. The new system bumps output from 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque to 457 ponies and 583 pound-feet. The hybrid setup is still hooked up to the same 10-speed automatic transmission. Lexus claims that the EPA-estimated fuel economy should ring in at 20 mpg, one better than the 2024 LX600, although the automaker says the number is still tentative.

Lexus says this is its first hybrid system to feature both an alternator and a starter. If the hybrid system isn't working, the starter allows for the engine to fire up on its own while the alternator keeps the 12-volt auxiliary battery juiced up so that the vehicle can continue driving without the hybrid system.

The hybrid system also has an all-terrain benefit, with the LX700h capable of driving exclusively off of the electric motor in low-range scenarios where the driver would want precise throttle control.

To account for the LX700h's extra weight, Lexus says a new three-cross frame is found under the bodywork. The spare tire was also repositioned to make room for the hybrid battery while maintaining the departure angle. The battery lives under the cargo area in two-row models and under the third row in seven-seater versions.

Exploring New Territory

The Overtrail becomes the fifth trim in the LX lineup and arrives ready to tackle off-road obstacles with new front and rear locking differentials, bringing the total number of differentials to three since the Torsen limited-slip locking center diff unit remains in place. The Overtail rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires and comes fitted with a front skid plate and a 2400-watt AC inverter to power whatever appliances you need to use at the campsite. The Overtrail trim will be exclusive to the LX700h, offered in both two- and three-row configurations.

Lexus distinguishes the Overtrail with a matte gray grille, black door handles, and dark gray roof rails. The window and bumper trim also receive a dark chrome finish while the beefy wheel arches are painted black. To complete the adventurous look, Lexus is offering the Overtrail in the tan Earth paint color, while the cabin can be upholstered in either black or Stone Brown leather with black open-pore wood trim. All-weather floor liners are also included.

More Goodies for Everyone

For 2025, the LX gets more standard equipment across the range. All LXs now come with active height control and an adaptive variable suspension, as well as a head-up display. USB-C ports have also been added to the rear of the center console, while a front wireless charger becomes standard on the Ultra Luxury trim for 2025. On the LX700h, there is a center console cool box and rear manual sunshades as standard, as well as a shelf system in the cargo area. For 2025, the front seats also gain five massage options when equipped with the semi-aniline leather trim.

All 2025 LXs also come standard with Lexus's Safety System+ 3.0, which includes driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high-beams, among other features. On the LX700h, Lexus will offer Advanced Park with Remote Park, which allows the vehicles to steer itself into parking spots.

The LX600's powertrain is unchanged for 2025 and Lexus says both the LX600 and LX700h are rated to tow up to 8000 pounds. Lexus says that pricing will be revealed later, and we expect the base price of the LX to be up slightly from the 2024 model's $93,915 starting price. The hybrid LX700h will probably start at least a few thousand dollars higher.
