Conor McGregor’s UFC bouts have historically been highly charged affairs, with sparks flying before, during and even after his fights.

However the Irish superstar’s recent loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 carried a somewhat different tone.

While it was clear McGregor and Poirier were heated rivals not willing to hold anything back in the ring, their match lacked the post-knockout circus that defined some of McGregor’s most memorable bouts.

It was clear there was a healthy competitive respect between both fighters - perfectly encapsulated after the fight when McGregor was sought out by Poirier’s wife Jolie.

Shown on behind-the-scenes program The Thrill and the Agony, which is produced by the UFC, Jolie tracked down McGregor after his loss to Poirier to thank him for making a donation to the couple’s charity, The Good Fight Foundation.

Prior to his battle with Poirier, McGregor had made a $500,000 donation to the fund, which serves underprivileged communities in Louisiana.

McGregor and Jolie shared a sweet exchange after the fight.

“Hello Jolie, how are you?” he asked.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much,” Jolie replied.

McGregor added: “Congratulations tonight, he fought a great fight,” - to which Jolie replied with a heartfelt thanks.

“Thank you for everything. It’s going to help change a lot of people’s lives,” she said.”

Respect between UFC stars McGregor and Poirier

Poirier himself has also publicly thanked McGregor for the donation to his charity.

While making it clear the pair remained determined to claim victory over the other, Poirier said the was nothing but respect between the pair.

“I don’t want to seem like we are up here giving each other back massages but I just wanted to clear the air,” Poirier said prior to UFC 257.

“Conor’s team, McGregor Sports Entertainment did reach out to my foundation and they are starting the donation to The Good Fight Foundation and we have huge plans for that.

“So Conor, man to man, you are going to help a lot of people with that.”

McGregor echoed the sentiments in his own comments prior to their long-awaited fight.

“I am honoured to share the Octagon with this man,” he said.

“I know we have this competitive fire, and it’s still there, there’s no denying that and it’s going to be a good fireworks filled bout but the respect is admirable for this man from me.”

McGregor hasn’t been shy to splash his cash, but has also made multi-million dollar donations to COVID-19 relief efforts in Ireland, as well as the Australian bushfire crisis in 2019.
