'So in awe': Mick Fanning announces birth of first child

Australian surfing icon Mick Fanning and fiancée Breeana have welcomed their first child together.

The three-time world champion announced, via Instagram, that his fiancée Breeana Randall had given birth to their first child Xander Dean Fanning on August 10.

Writing a post on behalf of his newborn, Fanning said: “I’m extremely strong, healthy and calm all because of my beautiful Mama Breeana is a full on superhero.

“Mama was so calm, relaxed and in the zone. Dada calls her his Zen Wonder Woman and is so in awe of how strong and amazing she is.

“Dada thought he could focus but he’s got nothing on Mama.

“She rules. Dada loves you beyond words.”

Breeana’s message to Fanning

Breeana also expressed her joy at becoming a mother and thanked Fanning for his support during the journey.

“Mick and I are beyond in love with our strong, healthy cub. It was you all along mate,” she wrote.

“I dreamt of you always. We're all doing so well and soaking in all the cuddles. I've fallen in love with you all over again @mfanno.

“My rock, my support, my everything. Cheers to this beautiful journey with you my lover.”

Mick Fanning’s career

Fanning retired from the World Surf League in 2018 after an incredible career.

The surf champion debuted in 1999 and collected 22 Tour wins, 11 Top 5 finishes and three World Titles.

In 2015, footage of Fanning being attacked by a shark in Jeffreys Bay in South Africa stunned the world.

Fanning was waiting to ride a wave during the competition when the Great White shark attacked him.

The surfer was able to fend off the shark and was picked up by rescuers.

Fanning returned to competition for another three years before retiring from professional tournaments.
