'Absolutely disgusting': EPL debutant sent off in 79 seconds

Manchester United has pummelled Southampton 9-0 in a record Premier League scoreline after teenage debutant Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off after just 79 seconds for an “atrocious” challenge.

The Saints were always facing a tough challenge travelling to Old Trafford to take on the high-flying United outfit, but the task became even harder after Jankewitz’s moment of madness.

After just 79 seconds, Premier League debutant Jankewitz raised his leg and collected Scott McTominay’s thigh.

This left referee Mike Dean no choice but to give him his marching orders.

Replays showed a visible mark on McTominay’s thigh where Jankewitz had collected him.

Fans couldn’t believe the 19 year old’s rash challenge barely a minute into the match.

Things only got worse for Southampton after the red card with Manchester United piling on the goals in a record blitz.

Red card leads to United scoring record

The hosts led 4-0 at the break with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, a Jan Bednarek own goal and Edinson Cavani on the mark.

Substitute Anthony Martial, with two goals, Scott McTominay, a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a late Dan James goal sealed the emphatic romp at Old Trafford.

The Saints were trailing 6-0 when Jan Bednarek received his red card, for a foul in the penalty area in the 86th.

United ran out 9-0 winners and moved level on 44 points with leaders Manchester City, who have two games in hand a superior goal difference, with champions Liverpool third on 40 points.

It is the second time the Old Trafford giants have netted nine times in the top flight - and the second time the south-coast team have been on the receiving end.

United beat Ipswich 9-0 in 1995 while Tuesday's result came 15 months after Southampton lost by the same score line at home to Leicester City.

"When a game starts like it does it was always going to be about if you can get the first goal," United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.

"It was about keeping the tempo high and getting the first goal and going on from there.

"We have been waiting for our strikers to show their magic, and tonight was a night they could go and enjoy."
