'Need to stop': Female athletes expose disgusting side of sport shutdown

Eugenie Bouchard and Paige Spiranac say they’ve been inundated with unwanted requests from fans starved of any live sport to watch.

Almost every sporting league and event around the world has been cancelled or postponed in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.

However the lack of sport has had an undesired consequence for a number of popular female athletes.

American golfer Spiranac - a vocal advocate for gender equality in her sport - took to social media on Sunday to call out some disgusting attention she’s received.

“Quarantine apparently makes people horny,” Spiranac tweeted alongside a graphic illustration of some of the messages she’s been receiving.

“There’s been an influx of d*** picks,” she added.

And Bouchard has apparently been receiving ‘dating resumes’ from fans.

The Canadian tennis player sparked a fan frenzy last week when she tweeted: “Not complaining, but i feel like quarantine would be a lot more fun with a boyfriend.”

The tweet sparked a flood of replies from fans and admirers - a number of which can’t be published here.

Aussie star Nick Kyrgios even responded to say he was ‘creasing’ with laughter about Bouchard’s tweet.

On Sunday she followed up by saying: “My agent just informed me you guys are sending ‘dating resumes’ to the email in my bio YALL NEED TO STOP,” alongside some laughing emojis.

And while Bouchard can see the funny side, she certainly didn’t ask for some of the creepy replies she received.

The disgusting treatment is particularly grating for Spiranac after she recently opened up about the horrifying ordeal of having a nude photo circulated online.

Speaking on her new podcast Playing-A-Round, Spiranac revealed how she felt ‘violated’ when someone she trusted published the photo.

“It was horrible,” Spiranac said. “Just getting these random messages from people you don’t know and they’ve seen you in such a vulnerable way. It was disgusting.”

“When I finally confronted the guy and said, ‘I can’t believe you did this to me’, he said — and I’ll never forget this — ‘You are the sl*t who sent it to me’,” she said. “He said, ‘You deserve this’.”

“I would wake up every single day, I would check my phone and be like, ‘Am I going to be on TMZ today?

“That was the worst part. I was constantly stressed out that someone was going to see it and someone was going to get it and that it was going to get out.”

Disgusting trend among sports fans

Earlier this month aspiring IndyCar driver Lindsay Brewer lifted the lid on some of the disgusting messages she receives from male social media users.

The 22-year-old, who has been racing since the age of 11, burst onto the motorsport scene a few years ago and has been labelled a future star of the sport.

She’s also amassed an impressive social media following of 1.1 million people, however that comes with some dark side effects.

Brewer frequently posts photos on Instagram from photoshoots, but as she recently revealed that usually corresponds with some horror responses from followers.

Brewer took to TikTok to reveal how a number of male fans responded to a series of photos she posted in a bikini on the beach.

“Goes and checks DMs, immediately sees two d*** pics and a poem,” she posted in a video that shows her quickly heading for the door.

She also said: “Sometimes they’ll throw in a little razzle dazzle and send a video.”
